Halfords rattle can primers give good robust coverage if added in thin layers. Bit stinky but definately cheaper than hobby specific primers
Large pizza sized multi compartment sweet containers with lids are fabulous for keeping stalled build sub assemblies in one place.
Garden soil and small roots are great for natural looking terrain. Stick on old baking tray and stick in oven on high heat for a 30mins to get rid of any creepy crawlies?

B & Q kitchen rounded profile worktops make great work benches. (They will cut them to size in larger branches) Their adjustable legs are good too
