Saturn V 1/72 Scale Dragon build Part 12

Sorry for the sporadic entries to my build diary but the last few months have been very trying what with COVID and now the cottage I rent being put up for sale as part of a larger estate because of the owner dying she was 105 so it was to be expected but stopped me in my tracks for several weeks wondering if I will have to pack up and move which hasn’t occurred yet so I have now resumed my modelling
So here we go with the third stage there’s only 1 picture this time as there’s not much to see at present just to note all the tanks / balls are all scratch built using a necklace bought off ebay for a couple of quid as is all the individual piping struts running up to the centre they were made from silver painted thread and glued into position to give a more 3D look to them instead of the poor mouldings
There’s more pipe work to be added to the engine when the structure has fully dried and hardened
More to follow hopefully more frequent than of late

    Regards

    Colin

Saturn V 1/72 Scale Dragon build Part 13
Well as promised here’s the next update with finalising of the the 3rd stage engine assembly showing my interpretation of the piping may not be totally accurate but it’s better than nothing at all if you build it the way Dragon instructs you to anyway next is the conical interstage that joins the second to the 3rd stage as its removable the internal structure needs to be represented so that’s my next stage of this build

              Regards

The interstage connection between stages 1 & 2 as this is detachable I decided to show my interpretation of the internal structure as best I can it was also difficult to get decent pictures to illustrate it so please accept my apologies for the bad photography

Saturn V 1/72 Scale Dragon build Part 15

Interstage between stages 2 & 3 this is cone shaped section that joins the 2nd & 3rd stages together and starts with more printed circles to produce the arcs that fit between the uprights inside the structure next come the rocket motors that push the 2nd stage away from the 3rd these were made from scrap sprue suitably shaped to resemble elongated cones these still need another coat of paint and detailing
Alignment wise 2 of them appear to be lined up with the demarcation of the white & black patterns so all I did for the remaining 2 was to line them up with the other 2
There is some confusion over these as I’m led to believe they were omitted on later flights which pictures seem to show however I’m fitting them on mine as internally there are some structures to built to link with the outer rocket engines which I still have to construct but will consist of a small diameter tube and an elongated type of fuel tank along with a bipod type of fitting to the inside of the interstage see my drawing not very good but you should get the idea the long thin tube will connect to the rocket motors situated on the outside of the interstage

                        Regards

Saturn V 1/72 Scale Dragon build Part 16

With this section I have now completed the rocket up to the ISU section which will be a major construction in its own right so here are the last bits to finish the 2nd 3rd interstage the pusher rockets on the outside of interstage were finalised by painting a black circle in the centre to represent the small exhaust port then as per my previous lousy drawing of the rocket boosters I constructed these test fitted 1 of them then painted them before installing into the inside of the interstage this then completed the interstage having already constructed the the 3rd stage previously the only things left to do is the outer skin detailing ie the electrical conduits and fuel pipes that run up the outside of each stage but these will be done last of all as some of them will need cutting to allow me to display the rocket as I intended to
So it’s onto the ISU which has the potential the most complicated part of this build and was the brains of the Saturn V controlling most of the functions via primitive computers by today’s standards and various gyroscopes and guidance platforms
Oh and if anybody’s interested the Barrett A1 Sniper Rifle is made from card painted black mostly and cost about £3 from AliExpress

                          Regards

Saturn V 1/72 Scale Dragon build Part 17
                            ISU Finished At Last

Sorry for the delay but this was a mini model in its own right and took 2 weeks to build using scraps of plastic and wood
It may not be totally accurate but it’s better than nothing at all which is how Dragon supplied it
So 1st off used the pc and a vector drawing program to produce the rough details then started constructing the actual structure see the pictures for a explanation finally a top ring was added to finish off the section
This was the final design two circles cut from heavy card and glued together then painted and mounted onto the now painted struts
After doing this I found the ISU ring wouldn’t fit into the top of the 3rd stage so had to make an extension piece which then entailed a further construction of around 100+ ribs on the outside to match the original and finally it fits onto the third stage

                            More pictures to follow

Next on the agenda will be the lem shroud which dragon have decided to mould in clear plastic so more grief there i fear

                            Regards
