Millennium Falcon - Revell - 1:241

Hello gentlemen

I bought this kit, knowing full well that it suffers from all the faults that most other Falcon kits do... tall sides, wrong details and generally bad proportions. I really just baought it so I might build with my son... He agreed to, but when the time came he was more like..."nah... not today dad"...

So I figured, what the **** I'll try and get the proportions right.

Lots and lots og filing and sanding. the of the mandibles - If I go by the x-wing game Falcon - should be about 3.2 mm tall... meaning that the material of the top and buttom plates on the madibles are about 0.5 mm... Like I said, lots of filing and sanding.

I was just going to use some styrene til do the sides, but the detailing is actually rather fine, so I decided to reuse the panels from the kit, trying to always decide which detail to keep and what to cut away.

Here's where she's at.

Btw, excuse my english, I'm from Denmark. I've been out of the hobby for 10-15 years now, tried to get back into it, but just couldn't make it work. So I've bought a Tamiya 1:35 Abrams tank kit, knowing that the fit will be excellent and the painting can be done after mature assembly. I've never done any AFV kits, just scifi and planes. as most of you probably know, ERTL and Revell scifi kits back in the day, weren't very good But first a little fun with this thing...

With all Falcon models it's best to remember there are discrepancies between them, even as far as the different models that appear in the same film!
Chose your references carefully, which you've certainly done from your pictures. Just say 'I'll go with this one' and stick with it. Put in the amount of work that satisfies you.

Oh, one thing that kit does appear to have got right i can see, the inside edges of the mandibles are NOT parallel

I used to do alot of 3D modeling, and I've tried my hand at the Falcon a couple of times. I'm well aware about the differences between the 5 footer and the 32" there are telltale markers to tell them appart. The old 5 footer even got converted to sport 5 landinglegs like the 32" one from TESB.

I did notice the same thing abouyt the mandibles too. Actually many of the signiture detailing that is on the side of the mandibles are hinted at in this kit. not that they are any where near accurate, but still... at this scale it's rather cool.

Nothing like the the Bandai kit ofcourse.

Y'know, I really ought to get on and finish the partwork pseudo-studio scale Falcon I've got the bottom half of...
Save up for the Bandai beast..?
Or just stick with the Lego one

I might go for the 1:144 scale... but the 1:72 is just too expensive.

See, now you've gone and done it, making me go and buy the top half - and THEN I have to find a set of seats for the living bay - AND sort out the rest of the kit interior...

Tonight's progress.

Ran into some trouble with the hight of the sidewalls on the saucer... So I had to get a little creative. Could have had a millimeter more of detail, but it is what it is.

On the other hand the docking rings can be filed down to look more like the ones on the real falcon. As they where, they where pretty far off.

Yes you're right. I slapped some white paint on it yesterday, only to notice I forgot to scratch some of the detail on the front of the mandible. Oh well back to it I guess.
