I feel a ship coming on...

well, oddly enough, my first inkling of wanting to get back into modelling was the interest in naval history, and I was going to start on a ship. However, I got given a couple of models, both tanks, so it began! Now, with a few tanks and a soft-skin under my belt, I'm back on hankering for the sea, and I thought I'd ask around here. I'm very interested in trumpeter's 1914 Dreadnought, but thought it might be a poor choice for a first attempt as it does look a bit fiddly! War spite and KGV appeal too. But I'm also sniffing around the two Liberty ships that Trumpeter make. Help a man who's struggling to sort his arse from his elbow! I don't want a kit that requires any filler, thankyou...

The academy 1/350 warspite is a good kit and very detailed with lots of little parts that make it look that bit better for the price , if you want something good but with less parts the the academy 1/350 graff spee is a good looking ship and comes with railings and it's cheep as well


If you have quite a bit to spend and want a really good 1/350 battleship then revell Bismarck and Tirpitz are very good

One of the attractions of the Warspite is that it's quite a modest size, am I right in thinking that the Bismarck is mahoosive?

And call me optimistic, I would like to explore PE at this juncture, not silly amounts, but certainly enough to learn new skills!

The academy warspite goes together very well, in fact I have not found an Academy kit which did not fit well, as for PE that is fiddly and frustrating stuff although if you get the hang of it, it really does make a huge difference.

I would highly recommend Trumpeters 1/350 HMS Roberts, comes with PE, it's small, highly detailed and a great fit. Derek

What about Italeri's Vosper MTB or PT 109. These also include PE parts that are reasonably easy to manipulate for a starter.

I have a ship in my stash calling out to me as well .......... Russian "Kniaz Suvorov". I have to finish what I'm on right now, and there's one more quick build before I get to it.

He are a few of my thoughts:


The large scale Italeri torpedo boats though containing PE parts, they are few in number. They do build well but are not very challenging... Might be a good thing. They are big. Offer plenty of scope for extra detailing.


If you go for a battleship don't think about it as one big kit, but loads of small ones that you end up glueing together. The scale can be a challenge. Brand wise? Tamiya build well but the revell Bismarck is said to be better than the tamiya one.


It's a case of hitting Google for reviews of the things that you are tempted by. After having a look in our own sections that is.

John, If you are looking to do something 'unique', Trumpeter will very shortly be releasing HMS Abercrombie, which like HMS Roberts is a Monitor, similar but different. I am sure this will be an excellent Kit. Derek

It's a bit slow in places but well worth a watch if only to see how to do PE railings!

If you do go out and get a trumpy kit be aware that the pe supplied is very flimsy, and you don't get plastic parts to replace it with , I have two trumpy warship in my stash one is started and it's now junk because of the pe it might end up being a sunken wreck , the other well unless I get some aftermarket bit it will just have to be sold , which is a shame because it's one of my faves

Thats a comprehensive build log! Wish it was HD!!! but all, or mostly all new stuff seems to be HD now, which is pretty much essential for the subject of P.E.!
