Interesting, although of course when you have the real thing to hand a simulator tends to loose its appeal!!

I once steered a cargo ship in mid Atlantic and then compared my course with the auto pilot course. Mine was awfull even though I was trying to predict the required correction.

I have also been on an engine room simulator in Rotterdam where they try to throw all sorts of curved balls at you which was interesting.

It would be a bit boring driving a simulator across the Atlantic for six days though!!!

Richard,it is a bit like these people who run scheduled airlines on simulators,if you join the groups then you are expected to keep the schedules running to time no matter what, not for me, as it is much more fun flying a Tiger Moth from a grass airstrip and doing a VFR cross country flight together with set turning points across lush green countryside.

Once I attempted to re-enact Lindberghs atlantic crossing, with that heavily laden Ryan NYP it would hardly leave the ground, when it did get airborne she would not climb above a few hundred feet,so I gave up just before it hit the coast.

        I have this SIm

it`s more port based and handling than long range runs,

something a bit different but doesn`t have the same depth as teh flight sims .

Many years ago I knew an Electrical Engineer who was a bit of a wizz and built his own computers.

He was into flight simulators in a big way and one day decided to fly his virtual Jumbo to Hong Kong. His mother had to bring his meals to him on a tray!!!

Takes all sorts as they say.

As for ship simulators forget the bits between the pilotages, just try to dock the dam thing!!

Interestingly enough ! When i had my Ngauge railway a guy ant my local ipms concocted a schedule for the trains to run (it was bloody hard to get it right and proved a lot more fun than just running trains around a track (i suppose it was a simulation for a simulation !! lot of fun though for a while

Dont forget that there are a lot of flustrated 'would be' airline pilots out there.

Simulators have changed their lives, each to his own.

Whilst I enjoy the occasional few circuits I could not go to those lengths ?
