Hey all , been really busy with my new job so have not been around for a while . I thought id make a start on the christmas present .

Billing boats version of the ill fated Anderea Gail .

Having only ever built plastic kits could i get some advice on sealing priming and painting ( which type of paint etc ) this boat as the majority of it is wood based .

I have already learned a new skill the ,art to bending wood with steam .

Billing have gained a black mark the prop supplied is a different thread size to the shaft supplied .

Hi Chris, Coming along very nicely and a very neat job for your first wooden construction.

For me you can use either a sealing primer or, if the wood is a good enough finish simply a Halfords car body cellulose primer. Rub it back with Wet and Dry, fill in all imperfections etc. and then another coat of primer. On top of that you can either spray car body cellulose paint or paint Humbrol enamels out of the tin or sprayed. it all depends on the type of finish you are after but certainly the car body spray cans are very easy and convenient.

Did you ever get to the Kirklees Model Boat club? Well worth a Sunday morning out if ever you fancy it. I'm away until the end of April but when I'm back we have a day out at Mountfleet models on the 3rd May and then it is the Harrogate Model Engineering Show the weekend after, well worth a visit.

Hi Richard , Have not been down to batley park yet i am struggling for time at the min as i am working conti shifts . and work quite frequently on a sunday now :emo10:. I would really like to attend the day at mountfleet though , so i best start saving as i have my eye on one of their boats .

Hi Chris, I stay with the old ways of preping wood both ply and solid timber, shelac based sanding sealer and good quality aluminium oxide abrasive sanding down the grain. I found it gives a good base for spray or brush primer that can be wet and dry sanded.

After sanding / priming give plenty of time to cure I leave boat bits for up to a week, dont leave in a hot atmosphere a warm well ventilated area is best.

Check the base of any paint you use ie; acrilic, cellulose, etc be sure to use the same all through the job as mixing can cause orrible reactions, the more time spent on base preperation the better the end job. regards Aquarama:thinking:

Its been a while but i have managed to get a bit more done.

I never liked the kit rudder , so i have ripped that out and added a modified robbe one . managed to get the hull somewhere near .I even threw some paint on her ( still need to clean up where is bled through he masking though ) Built up the outriggers and a few other odds and sods ..

Hi Chris, I thought you might be interested in a couple of shots of one of these models that was at the pond last Sunday. The modeller has converted the booms to enable them to operate from a servo so the move from a fully dropped position to a stowed position. It works very well and looks very effective on the pond when they lower.

Very nice i can only hope that my andrea looks any where near as good as his/hers . I still have a long way to go with her . I dont think at this time i will be making the out riggers fully operational , as i really want something to sail and the season will finish soon . I think my dusseldorf is going to be my long term project , with the Andrea while i am enjoying the experience of building her will be a learning curve into the art of model ship building .

I apologize for the punctuation etc , I have had a drink or 2 or 3 tonight and am beyond that task.

I built the Progress, a North Sea trawler by Billings, last year. 1960's kit I believe. I'm not a big fan of Billings boats. The instructions leave a fair amount to the imagination and paying extra for the 'fittings kit' always irks.I also had tp discard prop and rudder.

I basically water proofed my model using clear silicone. It worked well but it is always a good idea to take a meat baster with you for the first launch. Good for drawing off any leakage from the bilge! Photos are from Black Lake, Ontario.

Well with christmas with 4 kids , then having my accident in january ( http://www.scale-models.co.uk/chit-chat/6816-guardian-angel.html ) and busting my right hand , i have not been able to get a great deal done ... I am hoping to get something finished for spring i want something to play with . I may have to take out the dusseldorf minus a great deal of fittings and functions .
