help with deck gratings

Hi MarkYes thats how I think they would be made for the original ships [cross-halving] the only mod to that idea that I was thinking of trying is to clamp, perhaps 10 spars together and try to notch them on my bandsaw, I think it's going to be a "case of suck it and see!!"

That's exactly what I was trying to describe above. Another idea is a mini circular saw with a saw width the same as the width of the wood. Clamp a few together and run them across the saw blade set at half the thickness of the wood and move them across for each cut the width of the wood. They should theoretically all lock together then as cross pieces.

Your nickname is not "Jobes Comforter" by any chance HaHa, yes I know what you mean, I used a bit of artistic licence on "Sea witch" [could not get my "Dead Eyes small enough] I have a load of ice-lolly sticks [unused] and thought i'd try with them, then cut them of to the required thickness. I'll post in the future if I have any success. It will give me a break from ****** cannons

This is another little tool that might help you cut those joints, these have been discussed elsewhere on the forum too. Proxxon make really useful tools for modellers!

Your suggestion was the one that I was planning on If it Worked. which it did - very time consuming and my hands ache [arthritus] I have continued today and now have 12 holes!!!! in the grating But then "tomorrow is another day"

Yes I thought it would be time consuming, some jobs always are unfortunately. I dont know if you tried clamping several strips together as you mentioned previously and then filing all your notches across each strip, would save a bit of time.

From what you have done so far looks really good and the finished item will be well worth the effort you have put in.

Yes thats how I did it, 6strips in a woodworking vice to try it, scored the the lines with a craft knife then the edge of a small file went o.k. at first, but then I must have twisted the file and it cracked the lugs, so I had to take them out to glue them. Decided to assemble what I had as a trial and found by using packing between the stips it's quite easy to touch up the strips and add more, so hopefully I had'nt wasted my time and materials.

My thanks to all [Gaz,Richard(*2),Alan & Mark] for your help, suggestions & comments, whilst it is not perfect I can live with the grating at the moment. If I was working at the minimum wage I reckon it would have cost £80 for labour, found a U.S. model shop that sells them complete for $3.99 but it wouldn't feel the same.

Gratings look good to me - How many of those do you need to make though? I bet it's lots! By the time you'll have made them all you'll be a dab hand at it though!

It's funny how timeconsuming some of those little parts can be. All the effort shows on the finished model though, and where's the satisfaction of buying fittings off the shelf?

How are you going to glue those together so the glue doesn't stain the wood and show up when they are varnished, or will you just go for such a nice fit that they don't need glue?
