I'm afraid JJC have now completely ceased trading. Thier products occassionally appear on eBay but without any form of support or back up you are taking a bit of a chance. I have seen "Old Smokeys" going for 90.00 pounds though!!!

There has been talk amongst some traders of making a similar unit but nothing has come of it yet. You can actually buy the nebuliser units from electrical trade outlets but they are designed to work on a completely different voltage, which I think was 24 but I may be wrong. Anyway the trick is to come up with a circuit that will convert your model boat battery into the required volatge for the unit.

I agree with your thoughts on the oil based units, I have three "Old Smokeys", which look superb but when they eventually fail I guess I'm back to the smell of burnt oil again!!

Get a oil one but what you do to increase the smoke is quite simple drill a 1/16th hole in the bottle so air can get in and low and behold you will have copious amounts.i can see smoke coming out of my TID AT WELL OVER 60YDS

Sorry mate Im'e a little confused

            1/16th hole in the bottle
What type have you got as the only ones I have seen are the one's similar to the railway ones where oil is put in the top/tube I haven't seen ones with a seperate oil bottle

Also I should have said originally its not for me but a new member at the club who has not got internet access

The only other one I have seen are the Water one

Can you please let me know who makes one with a seperate reservoir

              Hi all

After failing to get an old Smokey, I bought a 12v seuthe super smoke unit, and find it produces a huge amount of smoke, so much I have it turned down in my 1:20 boat. If used with the proper seuthe smoke fluid it smells of lemon, and I have had people comment on the nice smell when the wind is blowing in the right direction.

A have found other people with the same unit were not getting anywhere near as much smoke as me, and found its due to I have mine on its own 12v battery. It seems if you have it on the same battery the motor is run off, the motor tends to draw the majority of the power when running, not letting the smoke unit work at its best.

To test my theory, I rigged my smoke unit and motor (graupner speed 900bb torque) up to the same battery and when just the smoke unit is running its puffing fine, but run the motor even just slowly and the smoke diminishes.

              Don

                    Richard,

The Seuthe (pronounced soy-ter, as I was corrected by their rep at Nurnberg toy fair) smoke units can usually be obtained from model train shops, or somewhere like Westbournes.

Once fitted, you should not play about with them, as they work on a capilliary glass tube, wrapped in nichrome wire, and are rather fragile.

Here are a few non model boat outlets. The prices do vary. So shop around.

BTW, I used to use disco smoke fluid in them, spits a bit, but plenty good enough at £15 a gallon.

                        Hi all

I got mine from here: Seuthe Smoke Units

It comes with a small 50ml bottle of fluid which is quite expensive to re-buy, so I decided to try some other cheaper ones. One from Maplin electronics and one off ebay. Both were supposed to be dense fluid, but neither was half as good as the proper fluid. I also tried a recipe from a guy at the local boat pond which was cutting oil, water and glycol, which worked about as well as the other ones but smelt awful. I have now resigned to buying the proper fluid as while its more expensive I feel it's worth it for the effect.

Just remember for maximum smoke run the smoke unit off a separate 12v battery.

                        Don
