Help with boat plans

Hi. I am very new to the hobby of boat building and I recently completed building from scratch a model international one metre yacht, Nimbus Mk3. I found that experience to be exciting and rewarding. The plans I had showed line plans and these plans also had the shadow plans drawn so it was a simple process of coppying these shadows onto ply to make the frames for my yacht. The problem I have now is that I want to build another hull but the plans I have only have line plans and I do not know how to turn these line plans into shadow plans. Can anyone please help me with this problem.

Hi Greg

When you say line plans do you mean actual PLAN views or do you have SECTIONAL views of the frames? I attach a photo of the frame sections is this what you have.

Hi Greg,

By lines drawings I assume you have the plan and side elevation, but not the bow or stern views. If so then the sections (frames) at any station can be drawn relatively simply with either dividers or a compass. (or just use a ruler and pencil). Draw the position of the frames (if not already drawn in), then measure (in plan) from the centreline out to the relevant waterline, and then in elevation measure up (or down) from the baseline. where the two intersect mark with a point or small circle. Do this for every waterline, join the dots, and you should have the section. (use a thin flexible strip of wood or plastic) Then draw another line parallel inside this the thickness of the planking you want to use and transfer this to light card. Use this as a template to mark out the frames nto your sheet of ply or whatever you are using. If you grab a book on draughting practice from your library this will have a section which explains this more clearly. Hope that helps some. For me its easier to do than explain.

Peter I have the sectional views and I want to build my model upside down on a board. What I am probably asking is how do I work out how much do I ad onto the top of the frame plans to get the correct lines when I mark them out onto the ply. IE from the top of the frame plan would I ad about 50mm/2inches to each frame plan to keep the correct lines when I attach them to the building board.

thanks for the advice. I have the line plans and they also show the frame plans. I need to know how much waste I ad to the top of each frame plan to keep the lines of the boat when I build it uopside down on a building board. the plan I have is a triple crown international one metre plan from the net. Hi Greg sorry for delay - I have not did any upside down -all I do is trace the sections " the use wife's greaseproof paper" stick them on to plywood using "pritt-stick" cut around on bandsaw just clear of the line [if you are extremely talented tilt the saw bench to help when planking] remove the greaseproof paper. I have not found any problem working from the keel up. I use slices of old polystyrene packing to fit between frames, this helps make it stronger when you are working with it and also if you sand it down helps give the hullshape/support to planking [see pic]
