Cutting gun ports in the hull of HMS VIctory 1:74 scale

Further to my earlier query re colour schemes for the Victory I'm now looking for tips on cutting multiple gun port holes.

Is there a way to make this easier than carving from corner to corner? E.g. using a jig saw with a fine blade without 'ripping' the wood veneer in the process.

    Hi Paul

Sounds like my advice is too late but I built my gunports in using the planking, if you look at HMS Unicorn on peter22 you will see what I mean

if it's not too late I could post details on forum

    best of luck

Unfortunately this isn't a Corel kit where they design their hull planking plans to account for the gun ports. In fact I have added a second layer of veneer planking to form a better hull look and feel.

Cutting of the gun ports is explained by using the plan drawing as a guide tracing the plan, laying it over the model to mark the positions, drill 2mm holes in each corner and then connect the 'dots'.

Constructo is almost out of business I think.

If the hull is made of soft wood, try a small square pastry cutter (if you can find one) and press firmly and the carefully eke out with a very sharp stanley/craft knife..drilling tends to leave circular edges in the corners...

If memory serves there is a "frame" around the gunports. Why not fix this to the hull first, then cut out the planking inside and behind it?

Unfortunately the frames are built after the holes are cut. I have some small chisel style blades for my Exacto knife which may work. Still a lot of tedious work though, but then so is tying 2000 odd clove hitches for the ratlines.
