    Boyhood boat update!

The pond beckons soon:music_toowindows to bond in and paint to hull to finish plus I think a p-bracket to the shaft to ensure it is ridged by the prop.

For those watching this little project I was given a bare, scruffy used hull about 30-35 years ago as a young lad and could not afford the r/c gear back then.

I did collect some bits together including an already unused vintage Taycol motor with instructions which I still have!

    Latest pics of boat attached.

Petrolhead, firstly, thank for your post.

I don't want to hijack your post, but I don't want to start a new one just yet as your project is so similar to mine.

My boat "Juliana" was built by my Father about 35 years ago, sadly he is no longer with us, so I can't get any advice on how to re-build her.

She's been sitting in my loft gathering dust for years and today, after reading your post, I brought her into the sunlight in the hope that I can get her back into working order.

I've not worked with wood, and I've never built a remote controlled anything, but I am a keen model builder and have a good understanding of how things work.

I need to re-build a rear mast, repair the front mast, re-furbish the exterior woodwork and replace some of the deck fittings. She needs a new remote control system, a new power plant and a smaller propellor.

Frankly, I don't know where to start.

I'll be keeping an eye on what you are doing very closely in the hope that your efforts can help me revive a cherished memory.

    Here she is:

Good luck to both of you getting these old boats back in the water.

        Hi,

Nice to see your "old boat" That is a proper model your Dad built, and I think a big decision is whether to restore sypathetically to retain some patina and old workings or to put new electrics in it which are cheap and work well.

Mine being only an old hull was easy to decide!

It looks like the gear is all there, so perhaps strip it out so you can clean, sand, paint as required before refitting or renewing.

mine is close to a tpond trial now, pictures will be posted. I too used to model a lot and even entered competitions locally as a child with some success! Since growing up I have swayed to restoring classic cars and boats so I too can work most things out.

Good luck and keep us posted

I managed to get a 6v gel battery pack from our local Maplins - I connected the 2 power leads and the engine sprung to life!!!! after 25 odd years, that was a real buzz.

I've stripped out the old RC gear and am waiting for a new control unit/servos etc. I am also cleaning off the exterior and am trying to fix masts, davits etc. I'm hoping to have the Juliana back on the water late April.
