Looking for boat enthusiasts in the Scottish Highlands

Hi everyone, I'm very new here, and very out of my depth. Please allow me to explain the reason for my post. My Grandfather was an avid model builder, and I recently came into possesion of five of the boats/ships he built. I have no real interest in boat building, but as so much effort and time has gone in to constructing them I'm looking to find them good homes (preferably in the Highlands as they are too big to post anywhere). They all need varying degrees of work to get them in perfect working order but all the hulls seem water-tight. If anyone is interested please let me know and I will post pictures of them. I'd like to state that I am not looking for money, or indeed anything in exchange for these boats, just merely assurance that they will be enjoyed by people who enjoy them.

Hi James and a warm welcome to the forum. Normally we would like to see a few posts from a new member before he starts to use the forum as cheap advertising but, as you don't seem to be interested in the financial rewards but more finding good homes for the models, I would suggest that you post some pictures up first so we can see what you are referring to and then perhaps we can be of assistance.

Hi, i'm quite new to the hobby but very keen. In time, i'd like to scratch build some models.

However, at the moment, the idea of models that " need some work" sounds ideal to me.

I'm based near Aberdeen. Drop me a line at

        davidhmail-boats@yahoo.co.uk

if you like and we can discuss. I'd love the opportunity to give a good home to your Grandfather's skill and hard work.

Thanks James, I look forward to seeing what your Grandfather built and I'm sure some of the other more established members here would be interested as well.

I would take a bit of time as well and try to see that they go to an owner that will be able to do them justice and look after them rather than someone who is simply after something for nothing.

Hi James, like Bunk says I think we'd all like to see some pics of what you have.

Hi Guys, I'm afraid I can't figure out how to post photos on here, but below you'll find a link to the photobucket album that I've uploaded them to.

                Those are excellent models.

I know you said you didn't want money for them but you should be aware that there is a significant value to them (collectively several hundreds of pounds).

Collectively you could be up to a couple of thousand there if you can find the right buyers. The Krick Victoria with boiler and twin oscillator should be worth in the region of 4-500 on it's own, depending on condition and what the state of the steam plant is. I would seriously consider how best to find appropriate new owners for these models and have a look at model boat specific sites such as Modelboatmayhem and Paddleducks as well as the forum on the Model Boat Magazine web site. You could also try advertising in Model Boat Magazine itself or even have a go at eBay.

What ever you do I think you owe it to your Granddad to not just see that they go to a good home but also realise an appropriate value.

Hi James and welcome to the site,

I can only agree with the others on here, that is certainly a fine collection of boats there that truly do deserve to go to a good home to someone who will do them justice and restore them to their former glory. I will agree that they are certainly worth a bit too so you may wish to consider that rather than just give them away.

The first boat certainly brings back special memories for me as I restored a model of this very same boat for a friend a few years ago and brought it back into running order. It is still available as a plan too from this link:

RAF Sea Plane MM1391 Plan - Only ยฃ19.95 - My Hobby Store

Good Luck with whatever option you settle on and I hope the models do find good homes

                    Regards..........Mark.

Hi Guys, thanks for your comments. I'm kind of struggling over what to do just now as we could really use some money just now, but I don't know what to do as I said all I wanted to do was find good homes for these vessels.

                        Hi James,

I would take the advice of the guys... there is a lot of cash there and your grandfather would have wanted you to benefit from his hard labors of passion i'm sure. It would be a real crime to give these away when you could use the money that your grandfather would want you to have. Do the right thing and do him proud. The people who would pay top money for them would be a certanty that they would give them a good home.

There are 2 Model shops in Scotland:

                        Paisley Model Centre - Paisley 0141 889 4221

                        Marionvile Models - Edinborough 0131 317 7010

Got these from my mag, give them a call and they may give you some numbers of local clubs that may be able to help.

                        Good luck

Put them on E-bay and state that the buyer must collect. Therefore, unless someone wants a LONG drive out they will go to someone reasonably local and you will get a fair price.

                            James,

Completely agree with AberdeenAngus but put a reasonable reserve on them as well.
