    HMS Illustrious

I really fancy trying a ship, I've found "Lusty" but apart from the obvious difference in kits like paints etc can anyone tell me if these are different? I think the A14201 is the newer kit but would it be better made?

I didn't realise that there were two??? I wouldn't have thought that there were two versions, it is a big kit and fairly new so I cannot see the point in doing two versions of the same ship. How odd. Will have to do a bit of searching around. The red box is definitely the newer one as the blue box is the one they 'launched' on the real ship.

I have heard nothing but good about this kit, White Ensign have done a photo etch upgrade for it to should you fancy going mad putting up the railings lol.

Looks like a re box to me, I can find no real difference. The blue box is the gift set with paints and the newer red box is just the kit from what I can see. The kit will be the same and from what I have read, is superb.

I can't offer any help here, the last time I touched a ship was (if I recall correctly) HMS Victory many many years ago with my dad.

I'd be interested in seeing the build, would love to build an old sailing ship for my dad but remembering the fiddly bits and rigging from the last one many moons back i'm not sure i'd come out of the experience entirely sane, it's a wonder my dad trusted me to be patient enough to let me help thinking back to that.

Thanks guys I didn't think there was a difference, I probably won't use the paints but I guess I would be worth getting that one anyway.

When I started modelling again, I found the little pots of Airfix paints essential as I had no stock, tools, nothing. However, I had nothing but trouble with them blocking my AB when I got it so I quickly dumped them. It was probably my fault but they just don't cut it for me. Have to say though that the blue box looks better.

Hope you are going to do a review/build on this John. It is going to be 'One of those Kits' and I have read many good, and no bad, things about it. Keep us informed mate.

I was thinking about getting the ones with the paints just in case I don't have a particular colour and only needed a little bit, I will do a build thread on it I'm planning on it being a long build as it has a lot of parts, and depending how I get on with it I might even try the Revell USS Wasp after, I've looked at that loads of times but I can't justify £175, even trade is £120, it's a lot of money for something I could screw up.

Mmmm, I have looked at the Wasp a few times to. Those ships can cost a fortune but they are amazing models done well. A timely reminder that I have a Japanese Aircraft Carrier still sat waiting for my attention. I really must get around to doing a project planner, I keep losing track of what I am doing.......

The two kits that airfix do are the same kit, one with paint one without.

I Did raise the question about detail etc in the thread HMS Lusty, but there were not to many responces to it.

My local plastic pusher is ordering a couple for the shop, so I too will be geting Lusty later.

Have seen Wasp by the way. Tons of plastic. Very nice clear crisp detail and a hull worthy of being my next cano! Bit pricy though.
