Some pics of the QEll that EMBC will be using at Inverleith (Edinburgh) for the Tug Towing events on 8th and 29th May. This is a 12ft stand-off scale model originally built by Findlay Mackenzie of Dundee and owned by 'Drilmar' - to whom we are deeply indebted. She hadn't sailed for some years until last week when function and ballasting tests were run. These unfortunately ended in a disater when she foundered after the ballast shifted in a crosswind. Retrieving a model of this size some 30ft + from shore was fun!

I am pleased to report that she is now restored to her full working glory (thanks again 'Drilmar') and should grace our pond again this weekend for further tests.

Again ! oh dear. Same thing happened a few years ago at the Loch Insh waterplane event when Finlay braved very choppy water and a stiff breeze rather than disappoint the crowd by keeping her ashore. Shifting ballast tilted her to the point where water entered lower (open) portholes.A full speed dash to beach her failed and she slid under the surface. The Sailing School lads with wetsuits waded out and recovered her with no damage, props still turning at full revs ! They got a bottle of malt for their efforts. Another one of Finlay`s fine models to grace Loch Insh was the Shorts-Mayo Mercury/Maia composit aircraft made in alloy sheet. It is in a Dundee museum, site of the start of Don Bennett`s record flight to South Africa in 1938.

When Edinburgh Model Boat club do something, they do it BIG. One good thing from the pictures is that with the white superstructure the ship could be seen below the water ain: ain:
