    An old Yacht......

I have been given an old model yacht by a friend who had it given to him as a child............. He isn't sure exactly how old it is but thinks it dates back to the thirties maybe. Tapping it it seems hollow certainly the deck I think ........ Lead Keel, and no mast or rudder.

Anyway, I was thinking of maybe rigging it (possibly installing some radio gear) but I have no idea at this point how the thing should be rigged, mast height etc........... As I don't want to screw it up.

    Any ideas or advice welcome.

Hi Peter, I build RC boats but alas not a pond yacht. First thing to do is find out if it is hollow, if it is a pond yacht it will solid or made up in sections. It is hollow do a bath test to see if it floats okay. I would have said it is a static model but the lead keel is a give away for a pond yacht. To turn into RC depends on size, you will need two servos, one for the rudder one for the mast and sails, ESC, receiver and battery to power the rudder and mast servo. How big is it?

      Si,

34" Length ........ 8" Beam at the widest ........ 9" Deck to Keel. The hull appear to be quite solid. But there is definately a hollow under the deck. There is a brass socket for the mast which is about 2" deep by 1/2" dia ..... and there is a brass rudder tube.

Sounds like the deck is removable, once off you can see how the mast would have fitted and if the rudder shaft comes through the hull. Mast height, you're looking at a 1 meter in height, there is away to work out the sail cloth dimensions needed but I cannot remember it. To convert to RC you will need more room inside, although micro servos, ESC can be bought.
