Not being a ship man really, can anyone give me their views on the 1/400 warships that Heller produced several years ago and have been released by Airfix? I fancy making the Hood or KG5 / Prince of wales.
I actually made a couple of them and the one thing that stuck in my mind more than anything was the out of scale plastic handrails that were included.
Having said that the only alternatives at the time were the Airfix 1/600th stuff so I enjoyed the Scharnhorst particularly. I think the rest of it went together nicely and if you can get some PE for the handrails they would look pretty good. It gives you a lot more choice in a nice size ship so I would try one.
Don't expect to compare it with a 1/350th Tamiya though as you will be dissapointed.
The first ship models that I ever saw were made by a company called 'Eaglewall' does anyone remember them ? they were very much along the lines of the 'Wiking' German waterline model, which were used for ship recognition purposes during the second world war.
The only ships that I have in my collection are some delightful Dinky Toy diecast waterline models, some Tri-ang Minic ships and a beautiful old wooden galleon model which was found in a junk shop, the latter was a wreck and I stripped it down to every part, cleaned and painted it,made some new sails from oiled paper and re-rigged her,I really enjoyed restoring her.
