Steven's Viking Ship (1/50 Revell)

Hi guys,
Although Viking ships always fascinated me, it's the "Vikings" series on Netflix I recently started watching which made me buy this old Revell kit in 1/50th scale (molds are from 1977).



This will be my side project during the memorial GB for AlanG. I plan to modify a few details and also make a Viking crew, which will take some time…



Sprue shots,
fuselage looks good with a nice wood texture,


The dragon head and tail (left/right) is one of the things I will modify,




The sail is vacuum formed, the spacing between the diamonds is quite large looking at reference pictures, I intend to make a new one, perhaps in the ‘lowered’ position, not yet sure about it…

Lots of decals for the shields, I might paint them all the same like you often see in the series. I won’t be using the large Viking-head-decal on the sail.

Looks really interesting Steven. Those reenactment boats are smaller than I imagined these longships to be. Not sure what you are thinking of for crew, but the Victrix 28mm vikings have had excellent reviews, and should fit the bill nicely.

Yes the series seem to use a smaller type of boat than this revell version, did some research and the Vikings had all sort of sizes in their fleet, they started small but the ships became larger over time.
Thanks for the tip, at the moment I'm thinking of making the crew myself with 3d parts and milliput, but will do some experiments first. Cheers

Just a quick update,

Overall nice surface details, some small injection pin marks on the inside (middle),


The moulds are old, so a bit of flash here and there, but easy to remove. A mould-line runs over the top of the fuselage (right).


Nice woodtexture,


After cleaning up the sides I glued them together, the fit wasn't bad but due to the length of the gluebond I added a lot of clamps(used TeT).


So not much done but it's a start ?

Another small update,

I've been reading some viking books and the deck-boards could be removed to store stuff underneath the deck.
So I've cut out a few boards with a knife as I like to display this feature,


I made many light cuts until the plastic bulged on the backside, then finished the cut from the backside.


Now that I opened up the deck the flat plastic inside will be visible through the hole, so I scraped some (heavy) panel-lines and then with the same tool some (fine) random lines to simulate a wood-texture.


I made a few beams from plastic-card and gave them a wood-texture by scraping them a metal-sawblade,


After cutting and cleaning the beams I glued them in place,


The mast pieces seem quite flimsy,


But when glued together it feels more sturdy,


Before gluing the deck in place you need to make sure that the underside of the mast fits into the bottom-hole,


Added 2 more plastic-card strips to the underside of the deck, to create a rebate for the panels I removed,


Dry-fitting the deck, as you can see not much will be visible but I guess it makes me sleep better though xD,

Next I painted the new inside with a brush,
started with vallejo black primer, then burned umber, Tamiya black panel-line pin-wash, added highlights mixed from burned umber/white/yellow, and a light brown wash,


Then I glued the deck in place, the fit was a bit loose, so tried to get a tighter fit by adding rubber bands,


The small deck for the helmsman creates an opening between the decks, so I gave the inside some black-primer with a brush before gluing the piece.

I like what you did with the cargo hold. Little extras like this enhances the kit further. Looking good already.
