I hope you all will enjoy this part built I'm hoping to finish it soon . PS where can I get sailor men for this 1/96 scale, so it looks like they are climbing the rigging and tidying the ropes up, as I lost all that came with it when i opened the bag and they were all loose.I asked The company that made this model does not do this model any more. because I already asked them. or what scale model men can I use to replace them HELP!!

Deans Marine does modern Naval figures for their range of naval vessels. They might paint up OK for this period.

That's a great start jim. We are off out for a meal in a min but if the PlayBook behaves and no one has answered before we get in I will see if I can help, here's a quick tip Si is the rust master about here, even stainless steel shakes when he comes in the room.

Jim I can only tell you about enamels as that is all I use (sorry old school most of them use acrylics now, I just can't get on with them) personally I would have painted the funnel before fitting and used the salt method for the rust, never mind, I am a novice at this but will try and tell you what I've learned (you can read other post on the salt method or YouTube it(very effective and very easy), anyway, you need to paint your funnel the colour its is supposed to be then when it's dry thin down some matt black till its the consistency of water then brush it over the raised panel lines and allow it to run where it wants, do this gradually you can keep adding after its dry till you get the effect you want, if you have over done it get a cotton bud dipped in white spirit and wipe the excess off, for the rust, look a pics of funnels to see the extent of it and using redish browns to blacks try to replicate it on your funnel, again if you've over done it a cotton bud in white spirit will remove it.


You can buy ready made washes from John's shop (click anywhere in the scale model shops logo at the top of the page, you won't find cheaper or better)

Right, rusting and weathering. As Ken pointed out it would have been easier to paint and weather while not loads of other gear around it-but never mind.


I take it the stack is going to be a matt black?


I use rust pigments-three:Mig- Old Rust/New Rust/Rail Rust all applied using Mig-Pigment fixer.


With a combination of the three you get looks like this:


1/144 U-boat total submerged look.

1/12 tractor with same pigments used on barrel/smoke stack and pipe and on the tractor tractor in places. The black smoke on top of the exhaust stack is black-smoke pigment, gives a good look of soot.

Remember that in your scale you will only need small amounts, you can reactivate the pigment using the pigment fixer at any time-unless you have sealed the model with a varnish. Use a very fine brush or micro-applicators.


I think you meant Ratlines and not Rat runs Only thing is using rigging twine/thread and a steady hand and making your own.

Nice work so far jim, I notice you've done the canons silver they would have been cast iron or bronze so would be matt black or er bronze the tool I got with the wasa was ok for the Royal Sovriegn which is 1/167 and the wasa is 1/144 not sure if it would stretch to 1/96 but you're welcome to the loom a line which I originally bought to do just that job, it's no where near as easy as the airfix tool but is supposed to do all scales. Came with no instructions and I could not get on with it but you might. Ratlines are actually supposed to go from the deadeyes up through the crows nest and down the other side to the other deadeyes. So if you were feeling braver than me you could do all the vertical ones then tie the horizontals individually, painstakingly boring but the correct way, which you will never get with a jig as you would have to cut them apart once off the jig.
