Don’t we all mate. Even when the guy holding the purse strings for the army was asked about it he said ‘what can I do’.
The reality is, if Percy pongo or jolly jack tar changes the bulb the unions strike as it’s a ‘trained’ electricians job and you’re doing a member out of work!!!!
But we all change light bulbs at home!!!

If you think that approach is limited to the forces you are sadly conning yourself Doug. Virtually all companies of any size use maintenance companies that charge the same sort of rates. The reason they won’t let staff do simple jobs like that has nothing to do with the unions. That ship sailed many years ago, no matter what rags like the Daily Mail would have you believe. The reason these days is to protect themselves (the company) from litigation if the employee injures themselves.
If Harry Stupid balanced two swivel chairs on top of each other, didn’t turn off the switch, stuck his finger in the bulb socket, got a shock, fell off the unstable chairs, so breaking a bone in the process, an ambulance chasing nobody with a large national advertising budget would be hammering on his door to take the case. The conversation from “Injury Lawyers 4Twits“ would probably go something like this……
”Did they have a sign up saying not to do this, and did you have training telling you not to balance the chairs?”….”No…..great, we can get you some money from them”. It’s cheaper for the companies to pay the maintenance costs than pay out for litigious idiots.

HI Guys well took tiger up Norwich pond on warship day an it was a paritshall success as the guys lifted her into the water an i then switched it all on an i asked my boaty mate Dave to hold on the bow to stop her from movein an well the prop thrust was a shock as it nearly pulled my mate into the water an he said JESUS there is a heck of a thrust from Tigers props

so i said right push her out to the pond centre an WOW she took off like a bomb an then right in pond centre she blew her 30 amp fuses so as no wind i had to get a tuggy chap to push her back to pond edge well i was not impressed blasted fuses gone again

So i fitted in them 40 amp fuses an Tiger was off again an this time SHE SAILED GREAT an at only half throttle so the boys an jen got me some pics an she was turning at about only 20 ft turn instead of a 50 ft turn like last time she was tryin to sail SO the props were a success an the MOTORS an the rudder so it was all goin great for about 5 mins an then i found she would not turn hardly again so thought now whats the matter so brought her in an due to how hot the day was well because i was melting it was so HOT WOW SO i had a look inside her at the motors an notice one of the prop shafts was not turning AN DUE TO THE HEAT THE RED PLASTIC UNIVERSAL JIONT HAD OPENED UP an the METAL PINS HAD ALL DROPPED OUT OF THE MOUNTIN so no more sailing to day an has it was SO HOT i said to jen we will pack tiger back in the car an go home as the heat just drained us of energy an we left the pond at 13-30 hrs an i felt faint from the heat so put on the aircon in the car an pulled up on rd side to recover BOY IT WAS HOT an wont go again if its this hot any way some pics an my freind neil was vidoein her sailin so he said he will put her on U TUBE but when i dint know SO A SUCCESS OF A KIND IM PLEASED TO SAY but i was talkin to a chap with a big MTB an he shew me some metal ONES for high tourke prop shafts UNIVERSAL JIONTS so im goin to try an get some an replace the PLASTIC ONES I HAVE WOW Click image for larger version
