Airfix 1/600 BISMARK

A bit cold still, even in my den. but I've managed to push on with this build.....

Two piece hull glued together and the two sections of the main decks fitted. Needless to say an initial bad all round fit, but I managed





Deck detail just right. At this scale and smaller, the caulking and detail around the fittings etc. would be virtually invisible.






First coat of Vallejo 'Air' acrylics brushed on. I rarely use primer, so the first coat of grey went directly onto the bare plastic... Pass the sick bucket!



Luckily, The boot topping lines are moulded in, so no need to scribe them around the hull with a pencil ( as I usually have too)

For any brush painters that don't use masking tape, I always work top to bottom on a hull, that way I only need to paint two straight lines throughout the three colour changes. Let the paint go below the lines. Grey/ black/ then bring the red up to the lower black line.
Here, you can see I've worked the grey to below the lines. Next comes the first straight line - the top line of the black boot topping. I will paint the black over the lower line a tad. Thus only leaving just one more straight line to do....The lower hull, red up to the bottom of the black.
I hope that all makes sense and makes this part of the painting a bit more straight forward.... Sez he!


A second coat of grey should be enough.

I have no idea what "Infamous Aztec Stairs" are. Help please.

After brushing on a final coat of grey, I've freehand painted the boot topping up to the grey line, but allowed the paint to go over the bottom line. This I will straighten out when I add the below waterline colour.
I have also started weathering the main deck planking.

Looking good Ron. Deck colour is coming on well especially.
With respect to the “Aztec stairs” it is the Aztec pyramid step appearance of the walkway ladders on Airfix 1/600 ships commented on a lot on ship forums. These are illustrated by the steps up to the deck behind the superfiring turret in your last picture. Not something I would worry about unless I was going down the etch madness road.....

Anyway friends, remember the old saying 'Pride cometh before the fall'? This morning I was sort of congratulating myself on brushing the black line straight enough for me anyway, when I took a belated look at the painting instructions........
The black boot topping doesn't run the full length of the thing, but terminates quite a way short of either end.

So I've had to set to with the scalpel blade and removed the black paint. Also, I had to scrape away the feint moulded boot topping top line.

It's good to watch these old historic ship kits (which used to come off the shelves at Woolies), being put together. In the thread about who inspired you, I noticed you mentioned your dad, this brought back memories of my dad helping get me interested in the hobby with the, Airfix's 1:600 HMS Hood.

On with my balls up.......
Rather than risk damaging the plastic with yet more scrapings, I've gone for paint coverage of the black.

Here's the first overcoat of grey. I was surprised just how well it covered the black. One more go with the brush and it should be o.k.

Just been catching up here.
Nice to see another war canoe on the bench and a Ron water base as well!
Those sprues are just plain nasty! On the bright side just cut all the barrels off and replace them with Hypo-needels (I'm sure matron can help you with that) then you will not need to drill them out.
