For once in my miserable life I have decided to do some modelling research to find out what camouflage, if any, Bismarck wore during her last few days)

There seems to be no definitive answer {Plenty of arguments!) It seems no one knows for sure. What I do know is that before her attempted breakout into the Atlantic, she had her 'stripes' painted out to an overall grey colour whilst in the Norwegian Fjords and her bow and stern swasty tickers were painted over in grey on May 22....

Does anyone have,100% for certain, any more info.?

Sorry I can't help you Ron as floaty things are out of my knowledge range. I can only say I really love the job you are doing on this kit so far. Earlier today, I was tempted to bid on a floaty thing kit in evilbay. it was the Revell Scharnhorst in 1/570 scale and it ended up selling for less than the postage. After following your work on these I thought I might try one myself (against my "No Kits" rule), but was afraid I would build and paint it with fireworks in the hull. Take it down to the water, pour lighter fluid on it, set it alight, push it off and wait for the bang!!!......Maybe another time without the flashback to my early days as a young 'un..........................

HI Allen i use too do that with a little demon in the funnel as back in the 60's firework banger were deadly an the ole ship went to the bottom in a smokey bang but i had great fun then

There are similar argufyments about the exact colours of the USS Arizona at the time of her sinking. Odd that there's such a lack of definitive detail on two such iconic ships. Wonder if there'll be similar questions about the Moskva in 70 years time?

PS Cracking little build so far. Just wondering what you're going to use in your 'Sink the Bismark' dio seeing as how you're so reluctant to bash this one about?

As you say, there's no 100% definitive answer and not one likely to be proved in the future. I've always believed the reports that the stripes & swastikas were painted over before leaving Norway. Where the Bismarck was going, there were no friendly aircraft, so the recognition swastikas would be worse than useless. Not sure what the stripes were for, unless it was an attempt to confuse submarines as to course and speed, but high contrast stripes against a grey ship doesn't seem to be a good idea!

Dave II. You are right about both the stripes and swastikas being painted out. I wonder if the white false wave on the bow was kept intact? Any thoughts?

On the false bow wave - not a thing you could have done at sea, so unless it was painted out in Norway, it may still have been carried - pictures are too indistinct

The bow waves were left, they are clearly visible along with the POW's 14 inch shell exit hole on the wreck. I have the monster Bismarck book amongst others and will look for you.
