Tuesday I managed to source some scrap lead to use as proper ballast, rather than the sand bags I had used to calculate what weight would be needed, and after cleaning all the bitumen and gunge off the lead, I cut it into smaller pieces and popped them in between the frames as low down as possible.
Then I floated her in my paddle pool and arranged the weights, so far all good, and good balance, then I notice some water in the hull, it turns out that my slightly rough installation of the lead had found a week spot in the hull and created a small split.
So back to the sanding down and resin coating again, but I also poured a dam of resin between the frames at that spot, so hopefully she is watertight again. Now I'm waiting for the resin to dry, then test, and then hopefully I can start re-coating the hull :smiling:
The fetching of the lead was fun, I had posted on the local book of faces what I needed, and a guy said pop around as he had what I was looking for, so jumped in the car, and of course the battery was flat, so I took out the bike, and wouldn't you know, it had a flat tyre.
So took the other bike which was OK, and fetched the lead.
I put the battery for the car on charge, but to no avail, by Wednesday the battery still wouldn't charge, and indicated a battery fault, so I phoned my wife and asked her to go and buy a jump start pack, which she brought home and then I had to charge the pack up. So a few hours later I got the car started. Then off to town to the battery place, and they said (obviously) the battery was kaput, so a new battery was installed.
So my quest for lead ended up costing $345 (about 170 quid).
Of course not a single cuss word was uttered, (if I'm lying, I'm dying)
So an eventful few days

You are a very lucky man Chris, Jen spoils you.
Good luck with your quest for the right ESC, and the best place to test is in the tank.
Don't get me started on women and shops

AN leaks in hull now that will be my stickin point when i do get tiger in the test tank ive got 11 weak points in my hull an they are 4 prop shafts an rudder an 6 stabillizers where water can get in so before she goes in i think i will remove them all an regrease them all in hope of no leaks an hopefully no hull leaks but think she will sit in the water bow down heavy as them 4 servos in them gun turrets are pilelin on the wheight an if thats the case then i will have lay some lead in the stern boy oh boy i'll be like an exspectant farther lol

I may float her again tomorrow, and make sure I have sorted the leak out, before finishing the hull off again, however the forecast is for heavy rain, so I will have to see.

HI Pete well its had old dead leaves in its an they make it all greasy in the tank side so the girls just pulled it up on it side for the sun to bake it dry an hard so when im ready to refill the tank hopefully there will be not much grease as my boaty mate richard bought over his 1/96 SCALE AIRCRAFT CARRIER
the IWO JIMA to float an when he lifted it out of the tank his carrier was all coverd in a slimy grease an he was not a happy bunny i can tell you so Pete that the reason ok

So far I've had to add about 2.5kg of lead to get her down to the waterline, but then again I have less equipment in Iron Duke.

boatman & Tworrs. When you guys did inside your hulls. (I know Chris added Fibre Glass/Resin) did you apply 1 or 2 layers of FG?
Only reason I ask, is as I mentioned I watched the big Tupperware super yachts being built. They layer the FG on but ensure each layer is 90 degrees to the last to build strength into the hull. They also layered FG over heavy duty sections like engine mounts and ensured frames/bulkheads etc were covered to strengthen those point too!! (Aided in the waterproofing).Comment

Doug, unlike Chris I didn't FG the inside of the hull, I just added multiple coats of resin. I figured that as the ply used for the skin was cross directional that would add sufficient strength along with the frames being only 45mm apart. The exterior was also just multiple coats of resin, paint and varnish. YMMV

HI Garry im not tellin you how to build your model an this is a suggetion only but you havent got much fitted inside your hull cant you just take out what you have fitted in an then coverin up the bits you cant remove an then add F/G MATTIN an thats what give my hull the strenght to be lifted an hopefully wont leak but up to you on that
chrisb
Maybe with the next one
