Got bored with painting so decided to move on to mast work. These kits do not have any included but provide dimensional details for construction from brass rod. Unfortunately they are at a random scale so had to convert/scale down illustrations to get an approximate diameter for each piece of rod. Then pick closest equivalent from my stock..dry fit for lower masts, next step is a first for me, soldering yardarms etc. as opposed to my usual practice of glueing, which is a bit ‘blobby’, especially at this scale (see HMS Kelly - above).

Some more basic paintwork and dry fit for the masts. Tried (four or five times) to solder the masts but made a complete botch of it every time, so reverted to my normal glueing method. Paint on the masts then everything will get a couple of coats of gloss/satin varnish to protect whats done. Waiting on some PE for the inclined ladders. Might move back onto the ’Heien‘ while I am waiting.Comment

Re-think on Heien, can’t find any reasonable references for paintwork as IJN ship, so going to finisher her as she was was originally commissioned as Chinese Peiyang Squadron ‘Ping Yuen’ but immediately after her capture by the Japanese at the siege of Weihaiwei.
I can then use the paintwork and build references from the Bronco 1/144 model of the Ping Yuen. Also found this model online and have ordered it as an advance b/dat pressy.
some revised paintwork then piccys for review.Comment

I don't know how you feel about buying from AliExpress, but there are some interesting models available

SS-Model seem to be the main producer - but there a lot of models, in various scales - not very easy to find, but worth a poke around.
I've bought from AliExpress quite a few times ( although nothing over £15 yet! ) - things like wooden decks & generic PE sets, and not had any problems - the only downside is the delivery time!
AliExpress is an escrow service - you pay AliExpress, they hold the money until you report you've received the item, then they release your payment to the supplier

ps I've no connection with AliExpress!!Comment

Hi Dave
The Ying Swei looks interesting, lot of brass for the price? . Might go for that one, might have a space in my unopened stash for it by then!!!!!
The Ping Yuen looks a little leso sharp than the Combrig version so I think I will still go with altering that. Still plan to mount it on the same base as the Fuso.
Don’t know if they were ever near each other (operationally) but in my “World of Goats” they will be .Comment

Not really my scale of choice but they ARE nice.
on another note, I have just finished another 1/700 kit, Atlantic Models HMS Kelly, which I found in a sale and has languished in the ‘Work-In-Progress’ wilderness for 6 months or so.
Just got to rig it, finish off the sea base and do a bit of work on number 2 torpedo entering the sea.

Graham,
as you may know, I'm dabbling in FDM 3D printing, and I've found one that may intrigue you
Download millions of 3D models and files for your 3D printer, laser cutter, or CNC. From custom parts to unique designs, you can find them on Thingive
Dingyuan in 1/700 - Sadly this is intended for SLA Resin printing - it's produced in the form of a single model, which is not really printable on my machine! Models like this are around, but they take a lot of ferreting out!

Hi Dave
Looks interesting, but I think I may have exhausted my patience with1/700 after this latest build. However!!! You mentioning dabbling with 3D printing, would you be up for printing to order!!! Know Zip about this process but plan to get up to speed on it. How complex is it?
