Before picking up our wristbands for the Telford weekend John and i from Clacton Ipms spent a few hours having a good look around Raf Cosford museum.Great exhibits and even a German Leopard 1a5 to delight me of course.

When XW666 (Damian) crashed in 1995 a replacement had to be found, it was one of only three R1’s in service. Nimrod XV249 was one of four MR2’s in storage at RAF Kinloss on a dispersal closest to the beach. Needless to say all four jets were corroded to hell. XV249 was put through an accelerated major servicing and flown to BAE Woodford for conversion.
For my part, I spent six months at Waddington making replacement parts for the avionics racks that were lost in the crash. Some parts of that jet were made by me. XV249 is one of many aircraft I worked on that are now in museums. Christ I’m getting old!
On the bench: Airfix 1/48 Sea King HC4, Revell 1/24 Trabant.
Coming soon: Airfix 1/72 Phantom FGR2.

I visited the 51 Sqn hangar at Waddington once to rivet a terry clip onto one of the racks containing some electronic black boxes. Entry to the hangar was via a single entry point. We had to hand in our i/d cards and were escorted by a RAF policeman and 51 Sqn techie to the subject aircraft. It took about five minutes to drill a hole and tucker pop rivet the clip after which we were promptly escorted out again. The thing is, the hangar that I worked in was also super secure with a single entry point because we did loads of stuff for ELINT aircraft for all three services.
When the Nimrod R1's went for major servicing at RAF Kinloss all of the sensitive equipment was removed before they flew up there, only the electronic equipment racks and standard role equipment was left on board. The internal layout was much different to the MR2 type, it even had a bigger chemical toilet.
