Penang MALCOM Show 2019

Hi all, just recently attended and had a great time at this annual show held in the island of Penang. Basically a three and a half hour drive up North spending three nights and four days there. The show was held at the usual Cititel ballroom for two days. I hitched a ride up with two fellow modelers and stayed at Cititel. Two of us got medals, my buddy got a bronze for his dio and me a silver for my ugly little tank. The competition was stiff this year with armor having more than a hundred entries. As usual I helped out with our SMM group displays bringing stuff on D-Day as that was one of three themes we decided on. The others were Planes of Butterworth through the years and SMM's past medal winners and latest works.
We were treated to the cream of Asia with participants from China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Lebanon, Singapore, Phillipines, Indonesia, Austrailia, New Zealand and Spain.
I was practically busy manning the table so most of the photos are shared from the chat group so apologies for some blurred ones...

I had the priviledge to meet Imad Bouantoun whose a well known Lebanese diorama builder judging at the show. He told me he was thrilled that he could see my R&R dio up close after catching it on Facebook two years ago.

Our D-Day display concept by fellow SMM member Mr Loo... his flying night scene of the Horsa being tugged by the Sterling was impressive. You'll notice my Hold Until Relieved dio in there too along with my glider ans Sterling well grounded.

The Show continued...

I caught Ruben Gonzales who is with AK looking at my R&R again having judged it two years ago when I got a gold and shared the WIP of it on my laptop. Very nice guy and he was as enthusiastic about the importance of reference that we can follow especially when he saw the old house I used as a reference point for my R&R dio. I admire his dios and kicked myself for not bringing an AK book for him to get an autograph...maybe next year.



Another admirer was Norio San of ModelArt. He has always complemented my dio and will stop and look at it having seen it many time before.



This time I was prepared and the WIP slides were a big help as I had only shared them on the Military Modelling and ScaleModelsUk forums.

Hey Peter, her her her, glad you're looking in. :smiling2: Young is very nice and so are the rest of the Koreans. This time I wasn't with the family so it was like 24/7 at the hall. :smiling:

The Dios...these aren't entries but displays from judges. The one below was mind blowing as I had only noticed the the submerged submarine then someone pointed out the specks on the cliff edge and that was when I discovered 1/700 scale individually painted seagulls...some with nests and eggs and a few in flight.







The other is also interesting with many details.
