I've been watching the teaser shots that Zvezda have been releasing of the PE-2. Looks like it will be a nice kit.Comment

Andy,
the 1/48 version has full interior & a complete engine installation - well worth a look ( I, as usual got mine at a good discount! ) - I also have the Zvezda 1/48 Su-2 in the stash, again with a full interior, also worth a look ( p.s. you can download the instructions for most of the Zvezda range from their website..... )

It can be called camouflage, because it is (if done well — I have my doubts about it on a lot of vehicles these days, though).
The way it works (or is supposed to) is that from a distance, you’ll see the large shapes of the pattern, while from closer up, the pixelated blocks break up the outlines of the larger areas of colour, which makes them more effective. The original reason for using square blocks is because this was originally devised in the 1970s, and computers back then weren’t powerful enough to calculate rounded shapes that had this effect, so they ended up having to use squares instead. I have the impression that much of this seems lost on current camouflage designers, especially in places like China, where “block = digital = good” appears to be the main reasoning, without actually looking at whether it’s useful camo or not.Comment

Jakko,
I wonder how effective it can be - it may disguise the shape of the aircraft, but it can't hide that there is something there - travelling at Mach speeds, throwing out huge volumes of hot exhaust gases ( I don't believe all the hype about masking infra red emissions! ), it looks good - but I can't help thinking of the US, with the F-22 & F-35 in their simple drab grey finishes

Though I do have to say I also wonder about the model you posted a picture of. What does it look like from a distance? If the colours all blend together into a single overall one, it probably doesn’t help all that much compared to just a single overall colour — at least not at that distance, though it may work up close. The whole point behind the original digital camouflage was to do both: see https://archive.org/details/DTIC_ADA040342Comment

Bait the line, cast the hook - again!
Sorry, it's just the devil in me rearing it's ugly head once more.
My model picture removed.
Cheers
