Wingnuts 1/32 Lancaster - good news…

Good news. It seems that the Border Models Lanc is being released in April.
There is an in-box review of a pre-production sample on Nigel’s Modelling Bench and he has just posted part 1 of his build starting with the engines. I am watching it now and I am so glad I have ordered one, it is looking amazing easily up to the standards of Tamiya’s best.
It looks to be well worth the high price, well worth getting that credit card out for. John has them for pre-order….Comment

too expensive for me, but I look forward to enjoying it vicariously- thanks for taking one for the team, Barry:thumb2:Comment

Just saw Nigel's part 1 :smiling:: the engine is a kit itself and a very nice one too; I think Border could sell that Merlin as a separate kit with just some new parts to enable the modeller to build the Merlin version he needs:hungry: (or leave those new parts to the aftermaket). I think, maybe naively, that could be a rather remarkable commercial success.
Said that, I'm with Neil: not affordable and really too expensive if compared with my current skills. Will eagerly follow anyone who's going to build it and give him all my moral support. Barry, you are #1 on my "to be supported" list, of course. :thumb2:

At £620.00 rrp. Don't expect them to fly off the shelves. No pun intended.
Keep an eye out for discounted kits once the first flush of sales is over.
But the size? My goodness where would the average householder keep it as
a display case would be a must for a model like this to prevent damage and deterioration?Comment

1/ A Rolls Royce Merlin displayed on a display frame supplied outside the aircraft.
2/ A Packard Merlin likewise displayed showing the differences to the RR
3/ The aircraft itself. The outer wings are removable ensuring that it does not take up too much space. I may, or may not, put two of the engines in the model but, more likely, I will use the ‘blanks’ supplied for a closed up engine.
I will be left with two spare Merlins that could be built as either Packard or RR. Perhaps I can find a home for them.
Looking at the kit and the work and time involved it does not look bad value at all.Comment

Once the after market crowd get making alternative bits for this kit it might even push up the cost to near a grand!I
I am sure it is a lovely kit and probably worth it if one can afford (or justify) buying it. To most modellers I guess that it will be just one of those kits that will be well out of reach for most, and maybe even those who might be able to afford it may be having second thoughts given the way that the price of more necessary things are racking up!Comment

The only aftermarket I think that might be worth getting are:- Masks for painting the markings. These are the only 'must get' - using decals on this kit seems to be just wrong when the small cost of masks will give a much better result.
- Gun barrels, brass barrels will be far less vulnerable as well as looking better. But these may not be necessary as brass barrels may be included, the only problem is that there are no cooling jackets on the pre-production examples, this might be corrected on production kits.
- It might be worth getting a 3D Decal set for the cockpit. But even then the kit 'pit is superb so a good result might be achieved from the kit.
- Metal undercarriage for strength. Again this may not be necessary, we will have to see what reviews say.
That is it. Anyone buying more is wasting their money.Comment

I think the largest hole for aftermarket for this kit needs filling with Crew members. Lots of possible choices. On station. "posed" in front of 'their ride'. Embarking/disembarking.
And as for ground support and maintenance.. A whole plethora of figures could emerge.Comment

Regarding figures 1/32nd scale is the actual equivalent of figure modellers popular scale of 54mm.
Might be worth a trawl of figure specialist manufacturers and see what is out there.Comment
