Think i've found a replacement to Klear......

Didn't get the results i was hoping with the new Klear, so i raided HWMBO's cleaning stuff.:bangin:Found this stuff and gave it a go.only try'd it on the quadford's glass and a 1/48 spit canopy the results once dryed is amazing. try it for your self. CheersMartin

What next Martin ? That is astonishing !!

I got very fed up with Klear. Gives me a headache & also found that the slightest will give a scratch which splinters.

Last model I used Vallejo gloss varnish air brushed on & found this much more protective added to which the decals went on perfectly which I did not find with Klear.

I know the cost factor has been sighted as an argument but so little, at least with Vallejo, is needed the cost is minimal. You can now get a large 200ml bottle for peanuts.

Not only that I do not have to go through the ritual expecting a headache, getting a headache, suffering through a headache, a moan, the horrible smell (bad bad) of Klear, plus two paracetamols tablets. Now there is a saving. QED.

I couldn't find Klear of Future and so use a product called "Quick Shine" by Holloway House. Seems to do what Klear is supposed to do, based on my reading of the forum posts, but judged by my low experience of modelling mind.

I haven't sprayed it yet, but haven't noticed any ill effects that I can relate to the polish, however, I must admit I agree with you Laurie, the Vallejo varnish is good and would be my preference.

I can't see how that would work the same as Klear, Klear is an acrylic varnish for hard wood floors, this is a fabric shampoo, most likely it worked on the canopy by cleaning it rather than coating it which is what Klear does, it's thin enough to flow into tiny scratches etc and give the appearance of the canopy being thinner.

Regarding a replacement for Klear, this stuff.

        http://www.longrangelogistics.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/uk_pledge_multisurfacewax-213x300.jpg

Which is the rebranded Klear behaves exactly the same as the old stuff though it's translucent milky white rather than see through and clear.

The only other downside is the new perfurmed smell, it digs into my head a bit as well but then i've never been able to stomach the perfume sections in dept stores either.

It's available in Morrissons supermarkets for £3.50 ish a bottle

As an alternative, I also have Xtracrylics varnish, cheap, excellent, thins with water and sprays well.

I don't know why it works it just does, It puts a lovely shine on every thing and doesn't block or jam up my AB.

          It was only a suggestion.

I have just tried Cif Floor Polish. Its clear, less perfumed than Klear ( pleasant but not overpowering). I tried it out on some figures I have as I dont really build them just to see the results. It didnt stink my AB up and the figures have a nice gloss to them. They stand up to an oil wash well and I can tell no difference from Klear. Except that its only just over two quid from Wilkinsons for the same size bottle of Klear! I'll try and post some photos of the figures but my camera work isnt brilliant. I have to use my iphone.

A bottle of Kleer went on eBay yesterday for £26.00 plus P&P!! It's obviously well worth looking for alternatives.

Hopefully my bottle will see me out. Maybe I should include it in my will!

I'm no chemist but it states it contains benzisothialzolinone which is used, in amongst other things, paints, varnishes and adhesives. Make of that what you will. As I say, I'm no chemist!

O dear I hate the stuff & have just given my wife back her original Kleer some 10 years old. Does it mature with age like antiques ? Perhaps it is an investment !

Heres the stuff, Tony. I'm still giving it working trials before I decide on it but it does sound hopeful. Klear isnt a specialist stuff. Its only floor polish after all and at £2 a bottle its worth a go.

I hate to say it Tony but I cant duplicate the results I got initially. Maybe its not as good as I originally thought.
