Airfix 1/72 fw 190 a-8 starter set - inbox review

Heres the Airfix 1/72 Focke Wulf fw190 a-8 in the starter set boxing. The kit is in an end opening box , containing one paintbrush ( not bad actually) , a bag with four small acrylic paints and a tube of cement , the instructions ,decals and a sealed bag containing the sprues. The box art is very nicely done and the reverse of the box has the colour painting guide on it. Click image for larger version

The kit is on three sprues in a softish grey plastic and a seperate bag containing the clear sprue with two different canopies ,one of which is not needed for this version. Surface detail is of the recessed variety and is very nicely done . Cockpit details are reasonable with moulded details for the side consoles , separate rudder pedals ,seat and stick and decals for the instrument panel , however no provision of a seat harness ,either moulded on or decal , there is however the venerable Airfix pilot included. Other details are quite well done including the wheel wells and I particularly like the separate exhaust stubs ( part c3 stage 3) . The wheels are a bit softly detailed , the tyre tread is almost indistinguishable but at least they have a moulded in flat spot and shaped axle stubs to ensure proper alignment .
There is a tiny but of flash on some parts but nothing a quick clean up wont sort ,but the sprue gates on some parts are a bit chunky so careful cutting is required , especially the cowling nose ring section which has them overlapping onto the part in three places - a very tricky clean up in a prominent area. The decal sheet contains one option , a machine from JG 26 , in I assume RLM 74/75 over RLM 76. The colour call outs are for the supplied humbrol acrylics and as is the way with these starter sets are not wholly accurate , only quoting the supplied colours. Am example is the prop , which should be RLM 70 but the instructions say hu33 ( black ) as its the nearest thing in the supplied paints . Similarly the cockpit and wheel wells are both called out as hu 145 ( dark grey ) but they should be RLM 02 for the wheel wells and RLM 66 for the pit . This isnt a problem for anyone really as a total starter wouldnt care anyway and a more experienced modeller would use their own paints of choice and probably look into the colours a bit more . The decals are quite basic and dont contain any stencils or swastikas but are excellent to use . Click image for larger version

In summary a decent effort from Airfix , suitable for a novice or experienced modeller alike. The only drawback are some of those sprue attachments . Availability , very easy to find online and in shops , price- round about £8-10
