    Aqueous Black Surfacer 1000

A long time back I used rattle can primer for fear of ruining my model before I'd even started ,then moved on to the mr hobby surfacer lacquer stuff with i must add no problems actually laying it down but began to find during weathering my acrylic colours were lifting in places ,this im sure was only down to me and my very aggressive weathering ,lots of scrubbing with white spirit and enamel based products ,this of course dents your confidence so moved over to AK one shot again no probs laying it down(I know some hate the stuff) and no probs with with the acrylics lifting was about to order replacement bottle when I saw this so penny and pounds dived in . Any body who uses mr hobby surfacer will know just how good it is well this is its equivalent but acrylic i thin it somewhere about 50/50 or even 60 thinner 40 paint ,im sure all the mr hobby thinners will work but I use their aqueous thinner ,personally this stuff is fool proof superb liquid silk ,self leveling im not sure but you can lash it on with no ill effects. I dont know if they do it in any other shades but priming in black doesn't bother me ,I'll highlight hatches and panels leaving the primer as pre shade before laying down the final colour. My opinion and mine only but I love the stuff some parts of this hobby are a confidence thing ,I know this will do what it says on the tin.

Very nice Dave. The finish certainly sells the product. How does it sand if remedial work is needed?

Ohh filler not my specialist subject Tim if any I fill and sand before priming ,I should think knowing the quality of their products(mr Hobby) its as well behaved as the mr surfacer lacquer range wich I know quite a few of the wingy chaps use. Dave

I was thinking along the lines of tidying rough spots missed before priming Dave. I always fill and sand first. I also use Mr surfacer myself, but I’ve found aqueous primers don’t feather as well as lacquer primers when carrying out remedial work, hence my question :tongue-out3:

Tim Tim Tim i think your asking the wrong man ,feathering ,remedial ,blimey I think it was Bob the stug reviewed a posh pair of snips I wasn't bothered wether they cut plastic or not only if they handled gnarly toe nails ,perhaps where I only work with the small scale stuff I don't need to worry about such things if I have ive probably made it in to rust bubbled paint or thrown some mud on it ,perhaps words like feathering and remedial are a good excuse wingy things to stay in the stash ,I'll put one of thoes laughing emoji things in here but I bet it dissappear when I post:tongue-out: cheers buddy for your input Dave
Well look at that it stayed there

I keep thinking about giving this stuff a whirl, I usually use any random black paint I've got laying around..(nato black from tamiya 90%of the time), looks like this could save me ages priming and then 'black basing' ...

Thanks for the info on this. Current use Vallejo's Black primer and whilst I think I've managed to crack it, I still do wonder how durable it is.

Might have a look at this when my current bottle of Vallejo black primer runs out.

              Thanks again.

It certainly looks to have a silky finish , and very neat spraying Dave.

Its very hard to review a product as you see from the pictures it lays down beautifully ,yes I thin it but no one mans thinning raitio to his preferred air pressure are the same ,I've never hardly touched the air pressure on my compressor(sparmax) I set it at about twenty but let air through the brush it drops to about seventeen constant. I mix to suit my air pressure always testing first and adjusting to suit on a sheet of printer paper not even going near my hard work till I'm happy ,not a beliver in fiddling with knobs and dials keeping it simple by leaving it alone. Also you can't honestly recommend a product someone will hate you for it ,all I can do is show you the results of my using it ,the rest is down to you. Thank you all for your thoughts and participation if you do try it out dig this back out again and add your thoughts/findings after all one mans bovril and all that. Dave

Thanks Dave I’m going to keep this on file and try it when I get another restock.
I use Mr Surfacer which I find works well but would rather use acrylics if possible so this should fit the bill nicely :thumb2:

Nice one David. Since Stynylrez and myself parted ways I have a need for a water based primer. this could be the one.
