I have just received from the Forum Shop, a couple of DVDs. One on figure painting and one on terrain modelling.
I have just sat through the Figure Painting ones and thought I would pass on my feelings about it.
The guy doing the video painting is none other than Rob Henden who pops up in a few magazines, especially Military Modeller.
The 2007 video is a no frills painting fest. No music, no gimmicks just an ordinary bloke who happens to be an extraordinary figure painter. The video's main programme runs for 56 minutes and shows how Rob painted his award winning SS Fallschirmjager (airborne trooper) figure. This is a large resin figure and the video shows the whole stage in constructing the figure as well as painting it.
Amazingly, 90% of the painting of this figure, including the face, is done using airbrushes. To see the fine shading, subtle camouflage and brush painted detail come to life is really educational. To see the face painted, shaded and highlighted using an Iwata Micron AB is just amazing. Yes, he does use hairy brushes to for edging and detailing and does explain that neither are exclusive, the airbrush and the hairy brush are a team of tools that work together.
As if that was not enough, there is also DVD extras.
These consist of a silent view of some of his models, not just figures as well as a profile of the man himself. It is good to hear one of the great figure painters telling us how he started out but great painter though he is, he aint a celebrity presenter just a normal bloke talking about his love of modelling.
Also in the extras are short bits on the fine detailing of the figure as well as a discussion on good reference materials and a list of recommended products. A part that I particularly enjoyed was the 'Correcting common mistakes' where he is painting the cast on straps of the figure and him saying that it doesn't matter if you go over the edge as it can be corrected, he then does just that and gets black paint on the finished camo. No panic, he just deals with it. I would have been stamping my feet and crying at that stage lol.
Although primarily aimed at the painter of larger figures, the processes even on small scale with a brush still apply. However, to see an airbrush used to get shading and camo as good as this really inspires.
In total the video runs for 85 informative and entertaining minutes. I highly recommend it
