Review of HMS King George V - 1:350 Tamiya

This will be my next project, although I am not ready to start it just yet, so I want to keep the sprues in their sealed bags.

A word of caution, before you buy the Kit you have to decide which year you want to chose for the build. The kit described here covers the KGV during 1944/45. If however you want to show it during the Bismark pursuit, you are better buying the Tamiya HMS Prince of Wales kit and buying the detailed but expensive conversion kit to convert the PoW to the KGV. The reason being that the KGV was fitted with seaplanes during the pursuit, and the PoW kit has this feature.

The Tamiya Kit comes in a nice strong box and is well packed as Tamiya's usual standard.

There is a complete Hull without the option of waterline, and a plastic stand is provided.

The components come in 6 grey sprues and one sheet of Flag decals. The Deck comes in three nicely moulded sections. There is no PE provided for handrails etc.

You have the option of the camo or the simpler Grey finish.

I have chosen to purchase separately the Gold Medal PE set, and the Master Model Barrels for the 14" and 5.25" Guns.

The PE set includes an external degaussing cable, which after much research I have established was removed and fitted internally circa 1943.

No wooden deck is provided, but the moulded one is nicely detailed. Two booklets of instructions are included, one in English and one in Chinese. Cheers Derek

Very nice project Derek. Beautiful looking ship. Although late 30's it still has a bit of Dreadnought about her.

Not built a ship yet. Have one in the stock HMS Illustrious 1980's type. Keep putting it off.

Just being down to earth I have noted that King George the Fifth was launched 4 months after I was born. Fancy that although I have managed to exceed her in years.

Thanks very much for those words of encouragement Gents. It will be my first 1/350, must admit the small size took me by surprise.

Laurier I am going for the 1945 config. the year of my birth. Cheers Derek

What a youngster you are Derek.

When you do start hope you will do an under construction piece.

Wow long time since I have been called that. Yes I will do an under Construction, but the BOSS has a month or twos 'projects' of her own lined up for me, so will wait till I can start before opening a thread. Cheers Derek

Hi Ian, I can't imagine how small the components of a 1/600 is. I was surprised at the I/350 components. Cheers Derek

i too made the airfix 1.600. as its smaller, the detail is not there so they are relatively easy. ive got a 1.350 dreadnought under the bed and i must admit...the amount of detail and rigging is scary. still trying to muster up the courage to start it!

Decided to add two more after market items to the build.

                              MK1 Design Wooden Deck

Eduard Lifeboats. This item is for the Price of Wales kit, but looking at internet sprue shots the boat mouldings look identical, so have gambled they will fit the KGV, as they are sister ships.
