The forum resizes them automatically so they end up with 1024 pixels (off the top of my head) on the long side, if they’re bigger than that. This automatically reduces the file size approximately quadratically (that is, if the number of pixels along both sides is halved, the file size will be quartered, more or less), and the re-encoding associated with this change in dimensions may take off more depending on how much compression it applies to the picture.
However, XenForo forums appear to have a problem with images that are above a certain file size before they get resized. I’ve not been able to work out how large a file will cause problems, but I suspect that might be related to the amount of memory the forum has available — not disk space, but working memory that the web host allows the forum to have.
