Warning - MS screwing things up as usual

Last night my laptop updated to the new Windows system

    Beware….

To avoid my photos being posted the wrong way around I stopped using phone and upload them to my pc.

While I can load from phone to the site and simply just Resize them, to do so from my pc I have to change the .heic photo format to jpeg then resize the jpeg for uploading. All in all it really is a right ‘faff’ but it works,’or rather worked, and fortunately now I am retired I have the time to do it.

But since the update when I try to Resize the jpeg or refuses to save it. It also fails if I rename the photo as well, in fact in the latter case it does not even open it and the size reads 0 even though it should be 1.5mb.

I have reported this to MS. As usual these techies are not as clever as they think they are in messing around with something that worked before.

So, right now, I am stuck!

Have you tried the “save as” option Barry? Usually you can save the file at what size and file type you want using that. Knowing MS the command is still there, they’ve just moved it and called it something else….

      Barry,
Is this the upgrade to Windows 11? Neither my PC or my laptop meet all the requirements for 11, so I'll quite happily stick with my old-fashioned, decrepit Windows 10!

Repeatedly Tim. I have tried all sorts of things and different file extensions.

Widows "updates" seem to cause a few problems here and there so I will stick with my old fashioned Windows 8.1 thank you.

I'm still learning how to resize pictures to be allowed to upload them to the forum. Never used to be an issue. My Lap top is also to old for Windows 11 so not bothered about it. What it will do to my desk top PC ...who knows.
Don't get me started on my IPad mini. Apple have stopped updates for it and for each week that passes, there is one more app that will not run. Grr.

I've been using ms picture manager after transferring the pics from my phone to the pc.

I just resize to a % that shows the picture at 100%-ish on the pc screen rather than the nearer 30% they are when viewed initially.

The pics can be rotated as well and after a bit of experimentation I can now ensure they view the right way up even though they might upload on the wonk as it were....

That is a bit odd. Apps should not update to versions that won’t run on the OS you have on your iPad — and if they’re not updating, they should just keep working like they always have. (Barring things like the app wanting to talk to a server owned by the app’s maker: if they take that down, or change it so it does something the older app doesn’t understand, it obviously can’t anymore, but the app might not tell you this in so many words.)

Bit unfair to blame Microsoft ( any company is fair game when they mess up ) , HEIC is Apple's proprietary version of the HEIF or High-Efficiency Image File format. ( i.e. apple decided a standardised format needed an apple tweak )

Your phone is storing them in that format, it has nothing to do with Microsoft.
You can get your phone to do the conversion

----- Tweak your iPhone settings ---------
There are two things you can do on the iPhone (or iPad) itself to avoid the HEIF/HEIC conundrum.

For starters, you can avoid taking HEIC images altogether and revert back to JPEG images. This will take up more storage on your phone, but will make transferring and using the images more seamless. To revert to storing new pictures as JPEGs, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select Most Compatible.

The other option is to convert images from HEIC to JPG on the fly when you transfer them from your iPhone to a Mac or PC. Go to Settings > Photos and look for Transfer to Mac or PC at the very bottom. Choose Automatic to have images and videos automatically convert to a compatible format before transferring.

The latter option is a good compromise. It saves storage space on your phone while transferring compatible images to your computer. However, if you're uploading your photos to a cloud service, they will still be uploaded as HEIC images. When you download them to your computer, you will once again run into a compatibility problem.

Thanks for that information Gary. I have adjusted the setting to store as jpegs as you suggest.

Now for a test… my model room is cleared out ready for the shelves to be done tomorrow and this, hopefully, shows what it looks like now…

Well that worked. Tomorrow I will play around and experiment more. Bit late for that now….

                          Many thanks

That’s not quite accurate. HEIC is a file that uses High Efficiency Video Coding inside an HEIF container, likely (based on a little reading) because HEVC-capable software is required to support rotation and cropping of the container’s contents. Apple has adopted it but isn’t the source of it, nor the one that tweaked HEIF into HEIC — in fact, the HEIF specification apparently implies HEVC is the default format for contained data.

well I guess Im just unlucky then. I have a few apps that just will no longer run after they have been updated....

Barry. Glad you got it sorted and you can post again.
