I currently live about eight miles from the farm Gen. Joseph Johnston and his men were camped at just before he surrendered to Gen. Sherman. The Whittaker family now own the property and I've seen some of the relics that have been picked up over the years.
As the story goes, some of Johnston's men knocked over a Federal Payroll wagon near Asheville a few days before the surrender, and knowing they'd be hung if Sherman found the loot, it was "hidden in a rocky outcropping". (all of the surrounding fields are tilled except for this one wooded & rocky acre out by itself!)
I don't build Civil War things yet. I build Automoble's. But I was born in N. Carolina & raised their. I live in N.E.Georgia now. I have a little Civil War knowledge,if I can be of any help on your progect, let me know.
Also I would like to say Hey,Frank good to meet a neighbor!
