compressor : is this a record.

Just come in and there is an awful smell (not me) a stink.

Searched and then looked at the compressor which was red hot.

Four compressors in four years. This must be a record. Not worth repairing as the postage there and back will pay for half a new one let alone the cost of the repair.

Do any of you have failures ? Annoyed . Do I go for an expensive one or another Chinese cheepy.

Happy side if I had come in later it may have been a disaster . Normally switch off after use. This time was failure time.

Hi Laurie I think it's time you got yourself a new not cheapy one.

Like you have already said with the cost of postage it was just as cheap to get a new one but now you have had 4 it would have been cheaper to buy a well known make. But saying that I've had a cheap one nice I started back modelling 3 year ago

what i have found(i only use mine when in the modeling room and switch off when i leave (i actually have a latch over the latch on the door to remind me))(once youve had a fire you become paranoid)is that sometimes when the compressor wants to start up again it sounds like it's jammbd and wants to start but for some reason can't, I find if I turn it off then on again it's ok, but maybe if I was not there and it did it, it would get hot and maybe start a fire, by the way our fire was not the compressor but the dishwasher, and if it wasn't for the quick thinking of a neighbor it may have been our whole house and not just our kitchen. Always turn off and double check.

Yes I had thought of the "knot in the hanky" Ken. Normally switch off all in he model room before going to bed. Now it is going to be when going out.

Interesting about the jam up. This one recently has when I am airbrushing has given every now and then a short 2 sec start then died with a burst of what sounds like air being released. Still works and switches off but feel now I can not trust it when considering the damage it could do.

I'm glad you discovered it in time Laurie!

I always use mine with a fan directing air over it - keeps it cool.

I'd also wonder if yours has a leak?

I've left mine with a full tank for hours (unexpectedly good film on!) & came back with no loss of pressure.

The compressor would only kick in to keep the pressure up, hence a possible leak.

Good thing you came home when you did!

As to another cheap china job... You have now gone through four for a total cost of....?

Things like compressors and airbrushes, I always say buy the best you can afford. If that means you have to wait a bit longer, then wait a bit longer.

Buy the best compressor you can afford , quality modelling tools can be expensive but will save you money in the long run , I bit the bullet after my compressor packed up a few years ago and got an Iwata smart jet pro compressor from John , not cheap but worth every penny , still working like new although single tank I`m yet to run out of air , hardly any pulsing and does not get to hot , we all notice the difference between a cheap and good quality airbrushes its the same with compressors , I think John done a review on this compressor

You may be right Patrick. But I think it must be intermittent as the thing is working OK now and keeping pressure. Went on holiday for 10 days and the pressure had not changed on my return (it was switched off). It is making these odd false starts and then a loud fart noise. (sorry Ian will take my punishment).

So a new one it will be. Think this all depends on your luck as others here I remember have the same model and have not had problems at all.

Even my one farts at times, its the electric regulator that is pressure activated. The compressor runs up and then as the pressure goes above the set limit, the cut off lets the excess out.

Some times its a little hiss and others its like a scout camp fire on bangers 'n' beans night (with out the pong though).

I recon its that dodgey jersey electricity you really need to invest in some bigger hamsters or smaller wheels so they can go round quicker

Get yourself a branded compressor which will be quality assured and won't burn your house down also I have a master switch for my modelling cave which I religiously turn off if only leaving my cave for 10mins and I also have a large fire extinguisher to hand as one can never be to careful I even keep all flammable products inside a metal box and don't forget smoke alarms I have two above my bench.the only thing I don't have is an escape pod for my stash but one can always replace models but houses and lives are a bit different

                        The misery gets deeper.

New compressor arrived. Set it up. No air.

Stewart investigating team comes to life and investigates. Hissing noise, deduced air was escaping. Just put the spanner on the joint and the joint fell away in tow bits.

                        That is compressor no5.

Still got no 4 so have asked if I can make repair by cobbling.

No no even worse Joe even worse. Half would end up trodden on and broken and the other half stiff with paint.

                            I know my limitations

                              Just unbelievable.

Replacement for the "dicky" compressor came to day. Guess what faulty.

The safety valve works to let air out OK. But the thing does not switch off. When will this misery end. Now five in four years.

No Joe despite all this I am not turning to the weasel sticks.
