Vellejo Model Air - Which Box Set?

Hello helpful people! I've had great success (and fun) with a Vallejo Model Air box set of 16 colours I picked up that were for the Allied Forces. It came with a useful chart of what colours were used during what times and scenarios so I can use those callouts for airbrushing planes. Awesome! I'd like to pick up some more - or, more accurately ask for them for Christmas so I don't have to spend money on them!

Was looking at the basic colours and metallic colours to fill most holes I have, but I want to get a German war planes pack too. Only there are two WWII German Colours box sets, with identical descriptions only different colours. There's also an RLM (whatever that means!) box set, which looks more like what I'm after, but the description again is useless...

If you were picking up a Vallejo Model Air box set of 16 colours for someone that will cover as many WWII period German Luftwaffe craft as possible, which one would you choose? Options here:

71.193 (RLM) is the only one i'd go for if I was just going to be painting Luftwaffe aircraft. The others contain colours for ground troops/vehicles

I would not go for any sets Mike. Best to buy the colours individually. Just before I start a model I look up all the colours and buy the individual colours.

Just so you know, RLM is an abbreviation for Reichsluftfahrtministerium, which takes far too long to type. It translates simply as the Reich Air Ministry and was the body that approved all paints to be applied to German aircraft.

RLM colours were given a numerical designation (RLM 65, RLM 02 etc) and any verbal description, even in German, is and was unofficial.

Many Luftwaffe model paint call outs will simply give the relevant RLM number and leave it up to you to decide what paint you want to use to match it. Sometimes the matches they do give are not very good!

i agree....those sets look nice, ive looked at them but theres plenty of colours you would rarely use........better to buy just the ones you do need

Aaahhh, that'll make life easier! Although I'm sure Airfix will just stick with the Humbrol numbers, but there's always a conversion chart!

Ok, next question. Where does one actually buy individual paints on t'internet? The only stockist in Reading that does it has a tiny range and are more for the Orc type model than a Spitfire...

Thanks to all on this, especially those saying to get individual bottles. SMS delivered today, my next three models have paint (actually I think I have the right paint for the whole stash!). And it was much cheaper than two box sets!

I foresee a fun evening of airbrushing! God I love the smell of Model Air, I swear there's an addictive drug in there!
