    Primers

    Hi all,

I'm in the middle of building my first truck model and wanted to ask what primers people use?

I have some Vallejo surface primer but I can see it becoming quite expensive in the long run, what other primers can I use in my airbrush to save some pennies?

    Thanks in advance,

    Paul...

I think you'll find alternatives in the

" Vallejo surface primer " thread

Okey dokey, as we're gonna have multiple threads on the same subject ...

Poundshop primer for me - 300ml a quid is way more economical & it's the best rattle can primer I've used.

I suppose on the cost front depends on what you get out of what you spend.

                  Vallejo primer

                  60ml. 2:92

                  200ml 8:25

I use mostly a grey in 200ml. I have used about 75ml. For that I have coated mist and normal coat on 10 1/48 aircraft plus about 4 1/72.

So using traditional maths for 1/48 types using a 200ml bottle that has cost 30p per aircraft. Not counted in the 1/72

For the 60ml the cost 34p per aircraft.

If you use the 17ml then the cost dramatically goes up. to about 50p per aircraft.

Thanks for all the replies everyone,

I was wondering if I could use car primer like the stuff sprayed from the big spray guns used in bodyshops?

I can get a 1ltr tin of 1K cellulose high build primer in grey for £11.00 or a 1ltr tin of Soll 1K plastic primer for £9.99 both with free delivery can either of these be used?

I wouldn't use high build primer, it's designed to show imperfections on large surfaces & would cause you to lose detail.

Both options seem expensive - by comparison with the cheaper of the two, my can of £1 primer would cost £2.97...

I did consider rattle cans but you don't have the control you get with an airbrush.

It's just personal preference I guess...

I'm still wondering how Vallejo works out expensive I get on average 10-15 kits primed out of one bottle....

Now... the next person that starts a new thread about primers, had better hope that I have taken my pills!

What on earth does that mean Ian.? What size bottle and what size projects.

Mine included huge aircraft Catalina a Wellington a Wessex and an enormous Merlin. Did not include the 1/72 which also received priming. Also included all the small bits and pieces which I also prime. On my assessment 25 1/48 aircraft for a 200ml bottle. Phew that seems very good to me.
