airbrushing advise

Hello,


I'm currently experimenting with my first airbrush kit and am not sure if I am doing it right.


I am using tamiya paints and thinning them using the following guide:

The effect I am getting is consistent but 'gainy'. The paint feels like sand to touch and rubs off on fingers.


I use a primer before hand which is nice and smooth. Am I doing anything wrong ?

Sounds like the paint is drying before it's hitting the model.


What PSI are you running your compressor? I use about 18-20PSI.


Also the distance of the airbrush from the model can make a difference.


You can prime an old kit or plastic drink bottle then test your setup on that.

Yep David's right, it's definitely drying as it hits the surface. Tamiya paint likes to go down slightly wet - just so you can see the wet reflection of the paint along each pass.


Get in closer, about 4-6 inches at 20-25 psi & you'll be fine!

New to airbrushing myself and had the same problem...... Put the 0.5 nozzle on and got closer to the model..... Problem solved

Yep, had this issue too, paint drying before coating properly, patchy and then a overcoat-again drying. Do as the guys suggest and hopefully that will solve the issue.

Its been said before but for people new to airbrushing you might want to use Vallejo Model Air that are designed for the airbrush and can be sprayed unthinned. It takes a lot of the guesswork and mess out of airbrushing. I would suggest 0.3 needle or bigger unthinned at 20-25psi. For a smaller needle I would thin it a little.

Tamiya acrylic can be used with the special acrylic gunze thinners designed to stop it from drying as quick can help.

I use tamiya paints as well as other makes. I always make my mixes a bit on the wet side as they do dry very fast out of the gun and like others have said don't be too far from the model as you spray. I have the same Compressor kit and free airbrushes all I will say is the needles are not great in them they have imperfections in them so the paint does not flow well at all they are ok for priming a model but that's about it. I ended up buying a Badger 105 and straight away the flow is amazing out of it I have had NO issues since getting the better airbrush. That old saying you get what you pay for.
