    Masking advice?

Hi all as you know I'm building Dragons Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket, and I need to mask off some areas that could cause me issues, so how do I mask off the ridged areas? Here's a couple of pictures to show my dilemma.

I need to mask across these raised lines in several areas, so ant help is appreciated.

Normally, Blutac would work, but you want hard edges don't you?

Masquepen system is very accurate Adrian. Masking fluid with two application ends. One a plastic nib end. The other a very fine hollow needle. Both work well.

With these two masking is very easy compared to brushing the stuff on. If you use it make sure you block the needle/nib with out delay to avoid blockages.

Oh never heard of that, would it allow me to have perfectly straight lines between the ridges?

Actually Adrian reading again your question not sure which bits are to be masked. Assumed it was the top border from the bottom part.

If it is across the ridges ie left to right on your picture I would think that tape is the only way. If so bit of work involved.

If you have any Adrian I would use a strip of Bare Metal Foil. Its really thin so it gives a fantastically crisp edge and you should be able to burnish it into the contours nicely so no bleeding. Not the cheapest thing to use for masking but on such a monumental project its probably worth it.

I would suggest tamiya masking paper its very thin and it comes marked like graph paper it comes in A4 sized sheets and 4 in a pack.

I agree with Peter. I'd only trust Tamiya tape for something that size and that straight, but you'll still need to really burnish the tape against each ridge.

Not looking forward to it at all, I did consider using Bare Metal Foil,,,I actually have some black, but I'd need to be spot on and cost a fortune

BMF or Parafilm might be easiest. A good quality masking tape might do the job. As others have said you will need to burnish the masking down into those angles. I find a cocktail stick, sliced of at 45 degrees to give a chisel like head is good for this.

                        Cheers

Will try BMF first, have some proper burnishing tools my mom used to use for card making so hopefully I can get a good seal

After applying a cocktail stick, I have painted Pledge Klear on to the edge of Tamiya masking tape, so that it covers both sides of the edge. Two coats. This was effective in preventing bleeding almost completely.

I managed without, I basically cut one side of the Tamiya tape and burnished it down, then wrapped another strip around and cut on the opposite side and burnished that down, worked perfectly
