Im sure it has to be me, but Ive gone throught these what seems a hundred times.

Today my Kinetic Grumman S-2A arrived and Ive been going through the colour list

It lists the codes in H forfamt and a number, this is the list

H1 1 White

H2 2 Black

H4 4 Yellow

H8 8 Silvia

H52 12 Olive Drab (yup, its our old friend olive drab again)

H18 28 Steel (Cant convert that to Humbrol but Im sure I can easily find it)

H12 33 Flat Black

H90 27 Clear Red

H50 50 Clear Blue

H76 61 Brunt Iron (pretty sure they mean burnt, no conversion but Ill find that one)

H28 78 Metal Black

So, no idea what the first H number is but Ive identified the second as Mr Color, so Ive done a conversion

It lists 11 different colours, of which 9 Ive converted to Humbrol.

So, I start to arrange them in order nof use.

Part 1 33 and 317. WOO, where did 317 come from, thats not mentioned in the list. Glad I checked before hand here

Part 2 - Nothing new

Part 3 - 28 and 316. Where did 316 come from?

Then nothing new

Then you get to the outer colour scheme

5 colours all printed in such low quality I can not possible read them

Flat Black (33)

Gloss White (Shall we assume 1 or perhaps its the 316 they slipped in without telling us)

Light Gull Grey with an FS number that I cant read

Canadian Grey which is used for the Candian version

{some letters} Dark Sea Grey which is the Japanese version

So, from a list of 11 paints, 2 are used, then they slip in 2 extra without pre warning us, then lets assume the two greys and the japanese sea grey were included but at the end they could no longer be bothered to tell us the codes, that still leaves us 6 paints they have pre warned us that they havent warned us that we dont actually need. "Hey kids, go out and spend £12 of your hard earnt pocket money on paints that you dont need"

Any help appreciated. Even if its a "there there, everything will be alright"

If this is any help i have a humbrol paint chart.

And here are some of your colors.

22 gloss white

129 gull grey satin

27003 polished steel get it in a spray as it gives a better finish.

Penny,I feel your pain. I can't really comment on the colours of post war USN types like the S2-A as it is outside the scope of my limited (very limited!) expertise, but I find paint call outs for subjects of which I do have some knowledge infuriating.

They are often wrong, just plain wrong. I have found that the best way to go about paint call outs is to do a little research to establish which colours were originally used and then try to find equivalents in the model paints of your choice. Sadly, though I can't say if this is the case in your example, the kit manufacturer's research is often a bit wayward.

One of the most dramatic developments in our hobby over the last twenty years or so has been the availability of such arcane information on the internet. I can't help you with this particular subject but there is someone out there, somewhere, who can!

Yeah, I use that all the time along with a few others. Im also trying to build my own conversion chart. I hear you say "O no not another one" but this is a spreadsheet that Im using for my kits. It will list colours and then a seperate sheet for the kits then you just enter the FS or humbrol number and it pulls up the paint with a status (if I have it or not, and what paint I own) along with a handy chart that I can print off so I dont have to keep flicking through all the pages to find the chart.

Its just got me stumped, I can convert the colours, just dont understand why they would list a few colours to buy that you dont actually need.....or do you?

Does anyone know where I can get a printed copy of a humbrol colour chart with the conversions.

Ive got 4 other charts on their way via John and if there are any others out there Id like to buy them too.

I tried to get my spreadsheet to colour in squares based on an RGB code from another cell but couldnt do it, so asked on the painfully slow internet how to do it and the best reply I got back was that I needed to first convert to RGB codes (So I need to convert from RGB to RGB?????), the other response was to instal some code that doesnt even work

Try this Penny. It is for Vallejo. But you can look up the equivalent of one manufacturer get the Vallejo equivalent. Then using the Vallejo equivalent match the equivalent from the same tables for the paint you want to use. Probably on average I get about 60% of the paints that way. The others you just have to delve. Actually find it ,strange I know, good fun.

By the way do not take paint charts, the actual colours, as being true as they are not. Tried it by painting on a chart the actual colour form the bottle they were massively out. Plus a lot of charts are on gloss paper which gives another false impression. Plus, god I am piling it on here, viewing on your TV monitor that will give incorrect colours unless you have had you monitor calibrated.

I think some of the "surplus colours" on your list, might be colours that are used during the actual build, thus not seen/show on the paint guide. All kit makers do it, Even airfix, they list all the colours for all the schemes you can do. I am sure many a hard earned pocket money shilling or ten have been wasted that way.

By the way the H coded paints in you instructions are also for Mr. colors paints they are for their Mr Hobby paints which are the acrylic versions. (I think :-/ )

Most shops that sell model paints have the colour cards as well, Just ask if you can have one and you will probably get one put in the bag.

Also agree with Laurie. Due to the printing process it is very hard (almost impossible) to get colour cards the 100% correct colour. I too paint mine over with a very well shaken and or stirred paint.

Just one other thing to add Penny, if you have a smart phone or suchlike there are a few apps you can get with model paint conversions on them. On Android I use 'Hobby Color Converter', it's free and up to date and converts Tamiya, Revell, Humbrol, Vallejo, Gunze, Citadel and Testors brands.

Glad to be of help. I noticed when updating mine, if you click the link as I provided you get their new chart with the new paint range on it. The old chart can be downloaded by clicking on the picture below it. The old chart is not up to date for the Humbrol range, but it does contain some conversions on it so I kept that one as well.

I just love that app. You click on the paints you own and if you are looking at paints it gives an alternative.

I assume the usual rule applies in that you still need to look at the colour and think about if its a good match.

However, the app lacks three things IMO. FS Numbers, a search and a notes section. Perhaps even a user input.

For example, earlier today I was looking for something that converted to Humbrol 183. Well, they dont make 183 anymore, but this converts to FS 16440 which is Humbrol Rail Colour RC422.
