Masking : Car lining tape

Graham (Scruff) put me onto this trail with the precise lines on his camouflage aircraft wings.

Car lining tape. The green is for cellulose finishes the blue for plastic. I have used both. The green is best for straight lines the blue is much more elastic and I have used that for curves etc.

Both release perfectly and there is no need for burnishing the edges as the tape just beds down with finger pressure. Easy to release for slightly adjusting the line without any loss of stickability.

The blue will go around very tight curves and it is very easy indeed to coax into the curve. Any kinks as the tape travels around the curve are bedded down with finger pressure. Best, as with Tamiya tape, to cut strips to get a good fine edge. I also for very tight curves cut thin strips, the tighter the curve the thinner the strips. I have gone down to about a half of a millimetre, it still stretches with out breaking and also still sticks down with out problems.

Not had any creep under the tape,yet ! This is probably due to the adhesive qualities. The tapes are about the thickness of Tamiya.

Using it on cockpit and windows and this has worked out well especially on round corners which would not be possible with Tamiya tape.

Great tip but I have no idea where to purchase these items from a name of the manufacturer would be a starting point for a search on the web I will google car lining tape and see what results I get

They can be obtained here John. Also gives the make and type so you may find them elsewhere by putting them in the browser.

Just thought I am using water based acrylics. Not sure how the plastic tape will up put with some paints. Best to check first.

Jawel Paints up the road from you sells it in various widths, also a good place to colour match any colour and friendly staff The website doesn't list it but the stores sell it off the shelf, used to get it there when helping my brother detail custom paint jobs.

I just had the green tape at the time Patrick. Thought it was good but then, as is usual never satisfied, looked up at the supplier I bought the green tape form. Blue tape it said " A highly flexible fine detail tape with excellent adhesion to plastic and rubber mouldings. Specially adapted for masking narrow curves, rivets and other surface details and is 3mm in width.

As you can see the green goes around quite tight turns but the blue even tighter turns.

Forgot to say with the blue you can over lap the tape at corners saving cutting. Press down on the junction line just to ensure contact with each tape and the plastic. Worked OK "so far".

The painters where I work use it on full size aircraft. It's good stuff.Theres usually the odd roll lying around at work.Dont know why I haven't tried it yet.

Make sure it is this type Dave. I used some some time ago and it was much thicker and left a lip on the sides. This stuff is as thin if not thinner than Tamiya Tape.

Good point Laurie.Knowing my company it will be the cheapest tape they can get hold of.Incidentally ive been using Decorators 'Frog Tape' for a while now.Its very similar to Tamiya tape but not as sticky.I normally mask the edges to be sprayed with Tamiya and fill in with the other.Just painted a 1/48 Mosquito.Ive run out of Tamiya so had to use the Frog Tape.It worked well.But I had to smooth down some of the edges between coats of paint where it had started to lift.Im at Telford now so will stock up on Tamiya .

Hi, FYI both of these tapes are manufactured by JTAPE www.jtape.com you might want to take a look as we have some cool custom tapes for the cars and motorbikes. These can be cut as narrow as 1mm. Happy taping.
