    Paint on chrome parts?

I have noticed that on the motorcycle I am doing that the fork stanchions are completly chromed including the attached brake calipers. As I have to paint the calipers a golden colour and ideally the body of the stanchions a sort of alloy shade,as only the sliding parts are nice and shiney. Will acrylic paint stick to the chrome or should I paint the part to be painted with bleach to try and get the chrome off? I have some rattle can primer for plastic should I give it a quick flash over with it?

Bleach will strip the chrome off.............. I normally just soak it for a couple of hours. But i guess, if you only want chrome off part of the component then try brusing on some bleach....... leave it a few minutes then try a green pan scourer ....... then keep going bleach/scourer untill it is off ............. Or at least that's what I'd do.

I've always just washed it and painted over chrome and never had a problem

Thanks for the quick replies, I'll leave the bleach as a last resort as I'm bound to dribble it on the wrong part and try just painting it first.

You could try keying it with very fine wet & dry, used wet, that'll keep the surface intact, but allow the paint to adhere. Some of those chromed pieces have quite a thick plating.

How about trying some of your paint on the shiny sprue which held the part.

I've tended to use a very fine grit sponge backed abrasive. This allows the paint to key to the surface, otherwise there is a high risk of it "chipping" off.o_O

People on utube deal with this using something called purple power.
