Matching an automotive paint for aerosol

Hi IJust joined the forum, I have an old 1960's AMT model car that i am trying to get an automotive aerosol paint to match as there are no colours from Tamiya/Humbrol etc that are near it, My question mainly is can i just go to a car paint place if i have a sample of it and a code and get them to mix up a aerosol to match what i want and if so what type of paint(acrylic?) as i dont want o spray it on and possibly melt the model or get a reaction, also what sort of primer should i use?
    Thanks

Yes, many paint suppliers will be able to make you an aerosol from a sample or code.

You will have to take care though as it will contain strong solvents that could possibly damage the plastic. Light coats with a decent drying time between them will minimise the risk, but maybe test your technique on some similar plastic first. A spare bit of the kit or even just a bit of sprue.

If you are using cans, many swear by Halfords primer. I use it myself regularly. Your paint supplier may have something suitable too if you explain what you need it for.

I managed to get some spare paint that came with the original (full sized car) and they put it in an aerosol can for me, I tried a few light coats and there seems to be no reaction and i am fairly pleased with it, I have two models i wanted to piant, The first one was a scratch built Scalextric model of a car we have and this is the one i tried it on first , now to try the styrene 60's kit tomorrow!

Here is the AMT kit i finished just before Christmas, Forgot how fiddly and time consuming it is to make a kit, I havent done one since i was about 12 years old, usually with lots of extra glue fingerprints on them, This one was a learning curve and hopefully they wil get better, Fairly pleased considering what a state the kit was in when i got it Click image for larger version
