Alclad II klear kote problem

Hi guys, while trialling some test pieces for painting and clear coating my Tamiya Subaru usin. Tamiya mica blue I have run into a problem. The automotive polish seems to make the alclad soft. I assume this is due to the type of lacquer the alclad is? Most other guys who polish their clear coats use automotive polishes and I'm not really wanting to buy model polish in case it doesn't work and because I have a few high quality polishes already.


I have also heard that halfords clear coat will dissolve Tamiya paint so my options seem to be either buy Tamiya clear, hiroboy 1k or use the alclad and buy another polish.


Anyone have any experience in this?

I can't really help you, but I do agree that the problem seems to be with the Alclad Klear Kote / polish combination and that you are going to have to change at least one of them.

What's in the polish that you're currently using Doug? A check of the ingredients might reveal whatever's causing the problem.


As for halfords clear eating Tamiya paint? I've never heard of that! Tamiya paint is normally very robust - I've put white spirit over it after just a few hours with no problems.


I guess mixing automotive products & model products run the risk of incompatibility.

Maguires doesn't actually say what's in it, it just says it should be safe on all paints Even after recent painting such as in a body shop.


The farecla says petroleum distillates.


what experience of halfords cc do you have over decals, the guy that said it reacts with Tamiya said he had to use Mr hobby top coat 501 to avoid any issues. He advised that alclad is really for going over other alclad base coats and doesn't handle sanding well

The Halfords one that I have is their Clear Lacquer - they advise spraying it over a matt surface for best gloss results.


I don't use it much anymore as I a) spray gloss enamels b) prefer to use an airbrush rather than a rattle can.


However, when I did use it, there was never a problem with decals. Virtually all Halfords stuff is acrylic now for safety reasons, so they're pretty easy to work with.


I've never used Alclad, but from what I've read you're right to say it's not meant to be polished.


I think getting a hard mirror shine on model cars is a perennial problem. Perhaps looking at some R/C sites might help?

cheers, I have been using Scale model Cars Forums as well and the guys there are truly amazing at the polishing lark, they mostly use 2k urethane paints but there is not a chance in this life I'm messing with that stuff without all the proper gear.


I bought the Hiroboy 1k clear to try but another guy has said that causes cracking with Tamiya paints eventually.


Why do Tamiya not make a clear that goes over their own decals for doing their metallic paints??? makes no sense.
