    December 1944 camo and weathering

I just had a very good conversation with my wife on modelling. We were talking of the project I'm doing "Assault Ardenne"

She noticed that I had done the figures autumn/ winter camo ( waffen SS ) trip colour jackets.

Then she asks me that the jackets or smocks were reversible which I exclaimed they were.

So she says if it was winter when Germany mafe the surprise attack then why am I panting the uniforms in the autumn camo style.

Now the ref pics and info do show some German infantry I'm white smocks but majority were shown to wear the smock with camo visible .

She has made a valid point though

Why not both? Depends on what you're doing at the time, sat in white field in a fox hole or making your way across a white field then white camo is going to be a yes. The other camo is ideal if shrubbery and forest is about.

What can I say I'm building the dio it's my build from my imagination.( no offence to the females out there but nothing has to be perfect!!!

On another note I do have grenadiers in progress and like Alan says the grey jackets and green trousers were a more common dress, and let's face it the German army was suffering supply issues at this latter stage in the war.

Snow didn't start falling until December 24th so that's why most pictures show soldiers & tanks without winter camo.

The ' pea smocks ' were reversible, but usually with a different pattern eg summer / autumn.

Patrick I could do with your help as I may be landing fir a big fall here with this dio I'm creating.

Ok the scene I'm recreating is hetzer crossing a ploughed field a few tank riders and grenadiers walking, R 75 and side car but with at least 4 jerrycans ( sine on tank too)

My research I did was for this to be Waffen SS 2nd panzer div heading westwards to the Meuse river to capture the bridges ( that's my scene in a ploughed field with scattering of snow on ground) from ref also the Waffen SS Das reich were sent westwards on DEc 18/19/ 21?? Dates in ref confusing. Some say early as 18 others say as late as 21 even 22nd?

So looking through the photo ref it looks like scattering of snow but I don't want to replicate scene then find out I've balls it up ( sorry for bad pun

            Regards

Well Robert, the main bridges over the Meuse were at Givet, Dinant and Namur in the central sector. These were the targets of the 2nd Panzer division, supported by the Panzer Lehr.

On the Northern shoulder were the SS Panzer I & II of which Kampfgruppe Peiper are probably the most famous (or notorious!) .

However, just to add confusion, some Wehrmacht units were issued pea camo smocks as well as the SS units!

Personally, I like the idea of a ploughed field with a medium amount of snow - deep in the ploughed grooves but with the ridges showing through. That way, you're giving yourself plenty of leeway in case an ' expert ' sees it!
