    Diluted Indian ink perhaps?

I use Flory Washes now and don't have any issues as there clay based so can be worked on up to three weeks after application if need be.

Have used Vallejo washes in the past to good effect also.

You may want to test a few different ones to see which one yields the best results.

I used a black oil wash on my bust and dredd figures and it gave a rustic antique look

I would go with the brown (sepia) had some good results with the vallejo ones.

Try a well thinned (very runny, almost water) mix of black and red oil paint on a test piece.

Mini what type of gold paint are you using?

If it is acrylic based then make sure whatever wash you use is oil or enamel.

If it is enamel based then use an acrylic wash.
