as I practice on smaller figures I decided to have a crack at this flag that came with the warhammer set , it's very detailed as you will see and this has been painted and stripped three times with different paints , I started with revell and humbrol but it just wouldn't work so I then tried Vallejo paints but it was impossible to dry brush with these so I decided it's best to get the citadel paints and it's come out better not exactly what I wanted but I think with a bit more practice with citadel I think it will come


It would be good to get some advice from anyone who has used citadel before to help with the practicing

Cheers Ian , citadel are good paints best I've used but a bit confusing, you get base colours which are thicker and layer colours which are thinner, I'm confused because I would think the base colour is the the colour you first put on but it doesn't go on veery well so you have to thin it and dry then you can't dry brush with it and the layer goes on much better but you can't get the same colour they tend to be lighter but you can't dry brush with them well without doing it lots of times


I thought at first the layer might be for AB but that doesn't make sense when you consider the size and detail of the figures , I need to practice lol

Cheers moni , yeah the old citadel paints were different, I used to paint the figures nearly 30 years ago when they did everything from Star Trek ships to judge dread all in white metal

cheers mate this flag is about 2 inches by 3 inches so some of the detail is quite small and it's difficult to do like the professionals do but practice makes perfect

I like the flag a lot and it shows depth with it aswell and as I'm now using the hairy sticks I thought I would see what's in my drawer of paints and came up with a " citadel paint!! ( catachan green )


If I remember rightly I was looking fir a good interior green ( cockpit ages ago ) and went to inkspot in Hamilton and they sell citadel paints ( war hammer ) and just by picking one or two up owner says what you looking for and I said cockpit interior green ( owner knew exactly what I needed....,, take this and give it two coats which I did and I would you Adam and Eve it it was spot on.


( I have 4 more of the same colour ) if your interested but I don't think you build wings things do you


Wonder if John at SMS would do you a deal


Not sure how it goes on with A/b but think it's more a paintbrush application with the little .04ml bottle


Anyway like to see some more of your fine painting. ( your bloody good at it that's all I'll say

Flags look great Alan I've only ever been into two war hammer shops but have always found the staff very enthusiastic and helpful so if you have one locally worth a visit for painting tips etc and I think they even have a workshop on Saturday mornings.

Cheers rob , I do have some of that citadel green mate as I want to do some ork stuff but thanks for the offer , yeah I've given up on wingy things for the time being I'm rubbish at them lol , I agree the more I've used theses paints I think if you tried to spray with them they would clog the gun , I'll take a look on the SMS app and see if John sells them

Yep got that mate, none of thats achieved by dry brushing just add your highlights making each shade a bit lighter. At that scale a very fine brush will be needed but i dont think your that far off it anyway

I agree Paul you can't do it with dry brush, thing is a lot of that is flat with no raised detail so how do you paint it to give a 3D effect ? I've tried to fade it in with oils but there's nothing to key to so you just get a dark blot


I think I need to find some very thin brushes as even the thinnest citadel brush is too thick

looking at the various parts, it looks like the lions have been painted using non metalic metal finish, if you find my post on painting lord uxbridge i did an sbs on NMM that will give you some idea, the others are the whole issue of light and shade and a good way to see where the light and dark areas should be is to base coat it in grey, wait for it to dry and then shine a light directly over the top with the flag upright, this will give you an idea where the lighter and darker areas are to give you the 3d effect. hope this helps
