    Mr hobby mr Color question

    Hi guys,

Quick question on mr hobby. I love Vallejo model air but I'm gonna give mr hobby a go from johns shop as I'm aware some of there matches are spot on and I've heard they are a lot finer.

What I want to know is do I really need to use a mr hobby thinner? Like Mr Color levelling thinner? Or can I get away with deionised water other thinners ect? Any first hand experience would be really helpful.

    Cheers

    Hi Phil,

I used Mr. Color lacquer a lot, and I used to use different brand for the thinner. Then I started to use Mr. Color thinner and the result is much much better. I guess it's gonna be the same case with the aqueous/acrylic one.

    Hope that helps.

Phil - the Gunze range are certainly nice paints but they are a very different formula to Vallejo and you really do need to use the right thinner. I have not used them much, though I have used their buffable metalisers a lot and I found that they spray beautifully.

I would not be too obsessed by colour matches though. Factors like scale effect, fade, sun bleaching, variable paint quality in wartime and general weathering does tend to make colours look different and this is why we see differences between brands even when original colour chips are used for the basis of colours.

Phil, the Mr Hobby range are a little bit like Tamiya in that they're a synthetic acrylic with an alcohol base.

So they can be thinned with water, their own thinner, IPA, or cellulose thinners.

I've tried them all with decent results, although the best finish came from using Mr Color self-levelling thinner. But that kinda defeats the purpose of using acrylic paints! The same goes for Tamiya - they spray beautifully with cellulose thinners.

As a middle ground compromise, I've heard that Ultimate Airbrush Thinner works very well with Mr Hobby. It's slightly more whiffy than the standard acrylic thinner, but much less than the cellulose stuff.

I've recently been trying UAT with Vallejo Model Air & thus far it's proving to be the 'magic bullet' that I've been searching for. It could spell the end of my enamels collection

i use distilled water. works fine for me.

from my personal experience, i will prime the model first. without primer, the mr color paint is easy to peel off if i put masking tape to the model kit.

There's some good points their Barry, I find that when I weather the colour changes somewhat anyway like you say. I'm not mega worried about a bang on match but I use Vallejo model air and love them I'm looking for another product to fall on and there has been a couple of colours that Vallejo just don't get right at all, for example rlm81 brown violet, I purchased a hataka version and although it's better they don't spray as nice and I've heard good things of mr hobby.

            Cheers

Blimey getting rid of your enamels! Really? Must be good I've heard good things about UAT cleaner aswell and will be running out of my Vallejo cleaner shortly so will replace with UAT cleaner and maybe get some of their thinner too.

              Cheers

So I ordered some Mr Hobby today from John and he was as helpful as usual.

I got the late WWII RAF pack and about 5 other RLM colours along with their levelling thinners.

I love Vallejo model air but I also like to try new products out I'll let you know how I get on over the next few weeks in this thread if anyone's interested.

                Thanks for the advice guys.

I second the use of UMP thinner with these paints - works great!

Phil - You could try the AK Interactive Air Series paints. They spray even better than Vallejo MA in my opinion, with a 0.3 needle they also don't need thinning and brush paint well also. They are packaged like Vallejo and initially I thought they might be rebranded VMA but they are a different formula. You can thin them with Vallejo thinner. They have three excellent sets of RLM colours. the sets are avail;able from John but the individual colours need to be ordered direct from AKI.

New question to this thread, before I go mad.

Does anyone know if spraying mr color aquoues over Vallejo model air will cause any problems? I've heard of people spraying Vallejo over mr Color (the lacquer version) which is different I know and had cracking further down the line. I'm sure if I thin both with water it should be ok.

Any advice would be well helpful.

                        Cheers Phil
