Mr hobby

simple question I have never used mr hobby paint before do I need to use their thinner as with tamiya,any other tips would be welcome.

I personally use there self levelling thinners which you can use on all there paints including there acrylics I think the only paint of there's you can't use it on is there buffable paints so not sure about other brands of thinners


There paints do stink so make sure you use in well ventilated room

Thanks Steve still experimenting with various paints,thinners etc have just ordered a shed load from eBay so in about a week I'll start and practise with them. Cheers

get Mr.Hobby Leveling Thinner and you will be OK. This is actually my "use it for everything" thinner since I tried it, even for Tamiya and Mr.Hobbyaqueos paints. Doesn't work with Valejo thou!

Let's all be careful about terminology here!


Mr Hobby is the Gunze acrylic range & it has its own specific thinner. The formulation of Mr Hobby acrylics are very similar to that of Tamiya in that they're a synthetic acrylic with an alcohol base.


Mr Color Self Levelling thinner can be used with both Mr Hobby & Mr Color, but that's a lacquer based thinner & is its odour is much greater than the Mr Hobby thinner. If you have any respiratory problems, it might be one to avoid.


There isn't a Mr Hobby Self Levelling thinner.

Right had a look at what I ordered it is mr Colorado so I need to get a hold of the self levelling thinner I think what about all the other products like mr surfacer what does it do? More questions I know but it's the only way I'll learn.

You'll definitely need a cellulose based thinner with Mr Color Jim. However, don't be too quick to go for the self levelling thinner. I had some of that years ago & it's no better than regular cellulose thinner. The 'self levelling' thing is bit of a gimmick considering airbrushed paint doesn't actually need to self-level.


Personally I like the high-gloss stuff you can get from automotive factors. It's very very pure & the finish is exceptional. It's cheaper than the branded Mr Color stuff & you can put the difference toward a decent face mask


Mr Surfacer is generally used as a filler or primer. Mr Surfacer 500 works with shallow filling like fuselage seams & Mr Surfacer 1200 is an excellent primer.


Both require thinning with a cellulose based thinner before use.

Just used aqueous hobby Color from mr hobby and thinned with the self levelling thinner. It's the first time I've used anything from mr hobby and I normally use Vallejo which I love.


My god maybe it was beginners luck but it sprayed and went down beautifully, as Patrick said the self levelling thing doesn't really add up as its dry pretty quick once put through a AB , maybe it helps when brush painting, I'm not sure. Apparently the levelling thinner works nicely with mr. Color (the laquer based acrylic) at a ratio of 1 paint - 2 thinner.


Anyways the two combined were a dream to work with, I'll be posting a pic soon on my fw190 d9 thread if you want to see the result.
